Police in Groningen shut down a party in the early hours of Saturday morning in a building belonging to student association Vindicat, allegedly for violating social distancing rules around Covid-19. A total of fifteen people were found gathered inside the building on the Grote Markt in central Groningen after officers arrived at the scene at around 12:30 a.m., police said.

Authorities were tipped off about the party, which brought them out to the Grote Markt."We then went on site and found 15 people in the building," police said in a statement on social media.

There were 446 known cases of residents testing positive with coronavirus in the province of Noord-Brabant, figures released by health agency RIVM showed on Sunday. The increase of 43 patients meant the province was far outpacing any of the other 11 in terms of new cases discovered. It was home to over 41 percent of all patients in the Netherlands, based on the known residences of 1,077 patients, the RIVM said.

The number of new patients diagnosed with coronavirus rose by 56 to 321 on Monday. Though the 21 percent increase demonstrated a slower spread than recent days, it did show another dramatic increase in the province of Noord-Brabant.

The southern province is now home to 134 cases, meaning that 75 percent of new positive tests came from residents of that province. Although Utrecht is still the province with the second highest total number of cases, there were no new patients recorded in Utrecht since Sunday afternoon.

There was a massive jump in positive coronavirus tests since Saturday afternoon among people living in Breda, according to statistics provided by health agency RIVM. The city is now home to 16 people with the new strain of the virus, out of 90 across the Noord-Brabant province.

Breda is now the city in the Netherlands with the most positive cases, followed by Rotterdam with 14, Houten and Utrecht with 13 each, and Tilburg with 12. There were six people being treated in Amsterdam and Eindhoven.

A new dataset released by health authority RIVM showed that a plurality of those who tested positive for coronavirus live in Noord-Brabant. Overall, some 57 of the country's 188 patients, a little over 30 percent, reside in the southern province.

The Groningen department of health service GGD is ready to receive the 900 members of student association Vindicat, who will be returning from their skiing holiday in northern Italy early on Saturday. The students will be returning by bus. At a special location set up by the GGD, they will be checked over and tested for coronavirus Covid-19, if necessary, AD reports.

The spread of coronavirus Covid-19 in the Netherlands is starting to mess with the preparations for the Eurovision Song Contest, set to be held in Rotterdam in May. At least three more people in the Netherlands tested positive for the virus on Thursday. Reports on social media indicate that at least three of the 900 Vindicat students currently skiing in northern Italy have been infected with the virus, but according to the Groningen student association, this is "fake news".

If the coronavirus continues to spread in the Netherlands, the authorities have measures ready to take the next step, Prime Minister Mark Rutte assured after a crisis meeting on Tuesday. For the time being, the government will continue to focus on curbing Covid-19. Schools will stay open and events can continue as planned for now, he said. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs updated its travel advice for Italy, warning travelers to only visit Northern Italy if absolutely necessary, RTL Nieuws reports.

While student associations like Vindicat in Groningen made agreements to reduce excessive alcohol use among its members, doing so in practice will prove to be difficult. Because student associations are financially rewarded by beer breweries and other alcohol providers for selling more alcohol to their members, RTV Noord reports based on its own research.

The municipality of Groningen is teaming up with the seven largest student associations in the city, including Vindicat and Albertus, to reduce alcohol consumption within the associations. There is a "too strong alcohol culture" within certain associations, and that must change, mayor Peter den Oudsten said to RTV Noord.

A 25-year-old member of Groningen student association Vindicat was fined 1 thousand euros on appeal for assaulting a prospective member during a hazing ritual in the summer of 2016. The student stood on the prospective member's head, causing a brain injury, ANP reports.

The University of Groningen and the Hanze Univeristy of Applied Sciences scrapped the management subsidies for student association Vindicat for the academic year 2017/2018. This follows a student being assaulted at a Vindicat party in December, and the association failing to report this incident, a spokesperson for the Hanze University confirmed to NU.nl.

A member of Groningen student association Vindicat was assaulted by two other members of the student association in December last year. Vindicat failed to report this incident to the relevant authorities, as they are obliged to do under the new hazing code. This new incident was massively met with disgust and calls for sanctions against the student association.

Groningen student Wouter B., 24, was sentenced to 240 hours of community service for inflicting serious injury on an aspiring member to student association Vindicat by standing on his head during hazing. He was also given a 31 day prison sentence, 30 of which conditionally suspended, and must pay 5,066 euros in compensation to the victim, RTL Nieuws reports.

The Public Prosecutor demanded 180 hours of community service and a 90 days suspended prison sentence.

The management of Groningen student association Vindicat denies all reports that its members destroyed the Sushi Mall restaurant in Groningen when a party with a few hundred students got out of hand last week. According to the management, there is "no damage", NU.nl reports.

Witnesses told city blog Sikkom that Vindicat students pushed and mocked the staff, threw glasses, kicked a hole into the bathroom door and peed on the walls.

A student who sustained a brain injury during hazing at the Groningen student association Vindicat decided to file charges against the association, the Public Prosecutor announced, RTL Nieuws reports.

The young man sustained a cerebral edema when another student stood on his head. 

According to the Prosecutor, the investigation into the incident is still ongoing. A spokesperson could not yet say whether it will end up being a criminal case.

Police and firefighters searched the waters of Spilsluizen in Groningen with boats, divers and a dreg team for missing Groningen student Wytze Pennink on Sunday. The 18-year-old boy from Bussum was last seen early on Friday morning. His body was not found in the search.
