Cat stowaway took a ride from Austria to Netherlands by truck, 4 March 2019

A truck driver was surprised by a strange stowaway in Aalsmeer on Monday. When the trucker, who came from Austria, stopped on Aalsmeerderweg, a cat jumped out of his truck, Dierenambulance de Ronde Venen/Amstelland said on Facebook.

Dierenambulance believes that the cat stowed away on the truck in St Georgen, near Salzburg in Austria. The adventurous critter therefore had quite a trip behind it by the time it jumped off the truck in the Netherlands.

The police arrested 12 people in the Netherlands for involvement in the production and export of drugs to Scandinavia. A 13th suspect was arrested in Peer, Belgium. The suspects are 12 men and a woman between the ages of 32 and 16 years. They were arrested on Monday, but the police only announced the arrests on Thursday.

The police searched buildings in Utrecht, Vleuten, Woerden, Maarssen, Houten, Almere, Waardenburg, Lopikerkapel and Aalsmeer.

The National Police is establishing a team especially for hunting fugitive members of the Italian mafia, AD reports. This team is in response to criticism from Italy that the Netherlands does not do enough to search for mafia members, allowing mafia leaders to live carefree lives in our country, according to the newspaper.

The Italian mafia is permanently based in the Netherlands and mainly engages in drug trafficking, according to the newspaper. Mafia experts also warn that the mafia is penetrating into sectors of the Dutch economy.

Since the previous risk assessment in 2012, safety office Veiligheidsregio Amsterdam-Amstelland dropped a number of older concerns to make room for new risks like the consequences of a terrorist attacks, increasingly dangerous storms due to climate change and the internet falling out due to a cyber attack, Het Parool reports.

The body of a man was found on Turfstekerstraat in Aalsmeer on Thursday morning. There were large bags of weed beside him. The police launched an investgation, the Telegraaf reports.

According to the police, several "bin bags" full of cannabis were found next to the man. "The circumstances under which he was found is so suspicious that the police closed down the area for investigation", a spokesperson said to the newspaper.

Trufstekerstraat is located in an industrial site in Aalsmeer. Large cannabis farms are often found on the site, according to the Telegraaf.

The police are certain that the assassination of 31-year-old Djordy Latumahina in Amsterdam in October was a case of mistaken identity, the police and Public Prosecutor confirmed to Het Parool after reports about it in the Telegraaf. On Tuesday morning the police arrested five people between the ages of 25 and 50 years during raids in Aalsmeer. All five are suspected of involvement in Latumahina's murder.

A flower farm in Ethiopia owned by Aalsmeer company Esmeralda Farms BV was attacked by rebels earlier this week. According to a statement on the company's website, the rebels set the farm on fire and caused an enormous amount of damage.
