An official heatwave became a fact in the Netherlands even before the sun rose on Friday. At 2:50 a.m. temperatures in De Bilt measured 29.7 degrees, making Friday the fifth consecutive day with temperatures above 25 degrees, according to Weeronline. 

The minimum temperature in De Bilt overnight was 22.9 degrees, making the night from Thursday to Friday the hottest night ever measured in the Netherlands, according to the weather service. The previous record was 22.4 degrees measured in De Bilt on July 27th last year.

Today is officially the hottest July 25th in the Netherlands since temperature measurements started in 1901. At 11:30 a.m. it was 31.8 degrees in De Bilt, breaking the previous record of 31.6 degrees from 2006, Weeronline reports. This is the 10th hottest day record broken so far this year.

Thursday will be another extremely hot day in the Netherlands. Maximums up to 40 degrees are expected, with some places maybe even seeing 41 degrees, according to Weerplaza. The chance is therefore good that the weather records that fell on Wednesday, will fall again today.

The night between Wednesday and Thursday was also very hot. Minimum temperatures ranged between 20 and 24 degrees. On Thursday the thermometers will climb quickly. Maximums will range between 35 and 40 degrees Celsius. There is also very little wind to cool things down.

The first weather record of the day has been broken. At 12:10 p.m. it was 36.1 degrees in Gilze Rijen, breaking the record for highest temperature ever measured in the Netherlands on July 24th. The previous record was 35.5 degrees, also measured in Gilze Rijen in 1994, Weeronline reports.

The Netherlands is currently experiencing high temperatures that can result in a heatwave throughout the country this week. The large municipalities are calling on residents to adhere to the National Heat Plan and keep an eye on vulnerable people during the heat of the day. 

“A heat wave occurs when the temperature reaches 25 degrees for at least five consecutive days and at least 3 times 30 degrees are also measured within that series of days,” according to Weerplaza.

Tuesday was officially the hottest July 23rd ever measured in the Netherlands. The thermometer in De Bilt climbed to 31.6 degrees at 5:50 p.m., breaking the previous record from 2013 with 0.1 degree Celsius, Weerplaza reports. Wednesday will be even hotter. Temperatures will climb to 30 degrees across the country by 11:00 a.m. Limburg may even see maximums up to 39 degrees.

With an average temperature of 18.1 degrees Celsius in De Bilt, this past June was the warmest ever June in the Netherlands since temperature measurements started in 1901. The previous record was held jointly by June 1976 and 2017, with an average temperature of 18.0 degrees, meteorological institute KNMI reported.

Sunday was both the first national tropical day of the year for the Netherlands, and the hottest June 2nd ever measured in the country. Temperatures at the national weather station in De Bilt climbed to 30 degrees at around 4:00 p.m., breaking the previous record of 29.5 degrees dating from 1947, according to Weerplaza.

Many Dutch decided to make use of the warm weather by going to the beach, leading to many traffic jams. People heading to the beach quickly became stuck in traffic on the A20 towards Hoek van Holland and the N201 towards Zandvoort early on Sunday, NU.nl reports.

Monday went into the record books as the warmest Easter Monday since temperature measurements started in the Netherlands in 1901. Maximum temperatures climbed to 24.8 degrees Celsius in De Bilt on Monday, breaking the 24.7 degrees record from 1949, Weerplaza reports.

While Monday was the warmest Easter Monday in Dutch history, it wasn't the warmest April 22nd. That record still stands at 26.6 degrees Celsius in De Bilt, dating from last year.

The current calender year will definitely be in the top three hottest years ever measured in the Netherlands. 2018 will likely come in second place with a average temperature of 11.4 degrees, though that will depend on what the weather looks like this last week of the year, Weerplaza reports.

The hottest year ever measured in the Netherlands is 2014 with an average temperature of 11.7 degrees. 2006 is currently in second place with 11.2 degrees.

Temperatures in De Bilt climbed to 19 degrees on Tuesday, making it the warmest November 6th in the Netherlands since temperature measurements started in 1901. The previous record was 17.1 degrees in 2005. This is the 13th heat record broken this year, Weeronline reports.

Westdorpe and Gilze-Rijen even had official warm days on Tuesday with maximums of 20.4 and 20.0 degrees respectively.

Unseasonably warm weather is expected in the Netherlands this week, thanks to mild air from Italy heading our way, according to Weeronline. Tuesday will be the warmest day, with maximums between 14 degrees in the north and 19 degrees in the southeast expected. Locally thermometers may even climb to 20 degrees on Tuesday, the weather service expects.

The unseasonably warm weather will remain in the Netherlands for a few days yet, according to Weerplaza. This is because the remnants of tropical hurricanes Leslie an Michael are leaving over the Mediterranean, instead of crossing our country as expected.

On Monday maximum temperatures will rise to between 22 and 25 degrees. It will be mostly sunny and dry. Tuesday will also still be sunny and warm, with maximums between 21 and 25 degrees expected.

Maximum temperatures in De Bilt climbed to 20 degrees on Saturday, making it the 100th national warm day in the Netherlands this summer, according to Weerplaza. Weeronline currently expects that the average maximum temperature in De Bilt this summer will come out at 19.1 degrees, which means that this summer is also the hottest summer since historical temperature measurements started in 1706.

Last night was the hottest night ever in the Netherlands since temperatures measurements started in 1901. The minimum in De Bilt was 23.6 degrees Celsius, breaking the previous record from 9 August 2004 of 20.8 degrees, Weerplaza reports.

Maastricht had a higher minimum temperature in 2012, but official records are always measured at the weather station in De Bilt.

Deelen in Gelderland was the warmest last night, with a minimum of 24.4 degrees. Flevoland, the Wadden area and the western parts of Zeeland all also had minimums of above 23 degrees Celsius.

The Netherlands is officially in the midst of a national heatwave. Temperatures measured 30 degrees at De Bilt at 11:20 on Thursday, the third consecutive day of maximums above 30 degrees, making a national heatwave a fact. Heat records were broken at 15 weather stations across the country, NU.nl reports.

For a national heatwave, De Bilt must have five consecutive days with maximums of 25 degrees or higher. Three of those days must measure temperatures of 30 degrees or higher.

The second quarter of 2018 was the warmest second quarter in the Netherlands since temperature measurements started in 1901, Weerplaza reports. The average temperature for this period currently stands at 15.2 degrees, but as June still has two expected to be hot days left, that may still increase.

Over day the average maximum temperature in April, May and June was 20.3 degrees Celsius. At night minimums dropped to an average of 9.5 degrees, bringing the average temperature for the second quarter to 15.2 degrees - much warmer than the usual average temperature of 12.5 degrees.

On Tuesday the minimum temperature at De Bilt measured at 18.0 degrees Celsius, making it the warmest May night ever measured in the Netherlands, according to Weeronline. The previous record was 16.9 degrees dating from May 24th, 2012.

This warmest night record follows a record warm day. Tuesday was the hottest May 29th since temperature measurements started in 1901 with a maximum of 30.7 degrees in De Bilt.

Thunderstorms that drew across the Netherlands on Tuesday afternoon and evening caused flooding in many parts of the country, especially in the Rotterdam region. The storms prompted meteorological institute KNMI to issue a code orange weather warning - dangerous weather - for the entire country except the Wadden islands.

Today is not only the fist official summer day of the year, but also the hottest April 19th in the Netherlands since temperature measurements started in 1901, Weeronline reports.

At 12:30 p.m. it was 24.4 degrees in De Bilt, breaking the previous heat record of 24.3 degrees from 1988. At 2:00 p.m. the thermometer in De Bilt read 25.1 degrees, making today the first official summers day - with temperatures above 25 degrees Celsius - for the Netherlands this year.

Today is officially the warmest January 24th in the Netherlands since temperature measurements started being recorded in 1901. The record dating from 1960 was broken in De Bilt at 6:50 a.m. with the thermometer reading 12.2 degrees Celsius, Weerplaza reports.

The day record was also broken at four other measuring points in the Netherlands early this morning, including at Schiphol. And temperatures will still climb somewhat during the course of the day, reaching a maximum of between 13 and 14 degrees. The Netherlands usually gets such high temperatures in mid-April.

Monday is officially the hottest October 16th ever measured in the Netherlands, according to Weerplaza. Around 1:00 p.m. a high temperature of 21.5 degrees was measured in De Bilt, breaking the 21.2 degrees record of 1949, the weather service announced.

For records such as these, only temperatures measured by meteorological institute KNMI in De Bilt counts, according to ANP. De Bilt is located in the middle of the Netherlands.
