Warm Weather Record on Feb. 15, But Cooler, Rainy Weather Ahead
The Netherlands witnessed a warm weather record on Thursday as temperatures rose to 15.5 degrees Celsius in De Bilt, breaking the previous record of 15.1 degrees Celsius set in 1998. Despite the unprecedentedly warm weather on February 15th, the Netherlands is expected to experience cooler and wetter weather over the coming weeks. The weather may remain unpredictable, with sudden showers and some bouts of sunshine, but without cold spells or winter weather.
Thursday was also the first official day of spring weather, as the temperature crossed the 15 degree mark in De Bilt, how of the KNMI meteorological institute. The warmest temperature was recorded in Woensdrecht, where the temperature rose to 18 degrees Celsius. The average date for the first day of spring in the Netherlands is March 11, but in recent years it has been earlier more frequently, according to Weeronline.
Last year, the first day of spring was recorded on New Year’s Day when the temperature hit 15.6 degrees. In the 1981-2010 period, the first official day of spring averaged on March 17, while in the 1980s, it was March 22.
From Friday, it is expected to turn cooler and rainy throughout the weekend. On Friday, the morning rain will be followed by clearer skies from the west in the afternoon. The temperature will vary between 10°C in the northwest to 14°C in the southeast. The wind will be moderate, becoming strong along the coast.
On Saturday, the weather will remain overcast with light rain or drizzle in parts of the south, while it will be dry with occasional sunshine in the north. The temperature will range from 9°C on the Wadden Islands to 13°C in the southwest. The wind will be moderate and will blow from the southwest, according to the KNMI.
Sunday will see periods of heavy rain across the country, with little chance of sunshine. The temperature will be between 10°C and 12°C, with moderate to strong winds. The wet weather will continue into Monday, with scattered showers expected across the country. Temperatures will remain similar to the previous day, hovering between 9°C and 11°C.
Tuesday is expected to be dry with occasional sunshine, but the country will remain vulnerable to rain showers or rainstorms. The temperature will remain constant, with no signs of winter weather. From February 23, the chance of erratic weather is high, with temperatures hovering around or slightly above the long-term average. The probability of daily precipitation will be around 70%.
