The first night frost of the season happened in Twente overnight. According to Weerplaza, the mercury dropped to 2.3 degrees Celsius in Twente, and a low temperature of -1.2 degrees was measured at 10 centimeters above the grass.

The first frost of the season happened a bit later than last year, when the first below 0 temperatures of autumn were measured on October 6th. In 2015 the first frost was in September already.

Windy autumn weather is expected to cause extra traffic jams on Dutch roads on Thursday morning. Meteorological institute KNMI issued a code orange weather warning for the Wadden area, and a code yellow for the rest of the country, warning of strong gusts reaching speeds of up to 120 kilometers per hour. Only Noord-Brabant doesn't have to worry about strong winds today.

Motorists in large parts of the Netherlands will have to deal with thick fog on Tuesday morning, especially in the center, west and south of the country. Meteorological institute KNMI issued a code yellow warning, saying that visibility may be reduced to less than 200 meters.

"Dangerous driving conditions due to poor visibility", the KNMI warns. "Adjust speed and keep a sufficient distance. Fog can be treacherous due to sudden appearance. Follow weather reports and warnings."

Avid fans of the Dutch Royals braved the early morning cold and mist to make sure they have a good spot along the route the Dutch King and Queen will take from Noordeinde Palace to the Ridderzaal in The Hague for Budget Day. The first spectators arrived at the palace at 6:30 a.m on Tuesday, according to ANP.

Saba and Sint Eustatius are anxiously awaiting Hurricane Maria, which is set to pass close by the islands in the course of the morning or early in the afternoon. Hurricane Maria increased in strength and is now considered a category 5 hurricane, the strongest category, with wind speeds up to 260 kilometers per hour, BNR reports.

Hurricane Maria is heading towards the Caribbean, but is currently expected to miss the Kingdom of the Netherlands islands, according to Nicolien Kroon of Buienradar. The strong winds and heavy rains the hurricane brings with it can still cause many problems on the islands, especially for Sint Maarten, which was devastated by a week and a half a go, RTL Nieuws reports.

The Netherlands' coastal provinces will face the season's first official autumn storm on Wednesday, according to meteorological institute KNMI. The KNMI warns of wind gusts on the coast and the IJsselmeer of up to 90 kilometers per hour. Weerplaza forecasts winds of up to 120 kilometers per hour on the Wadden.

The first plane carrying evacuees from Sint Maarten is on its way back to the Netherlands. The air force KDC-10 plane is expected to land at Eindhoven air base at around 3:30 p.m., Omroep Brabant reports. The evacuees were previously only taken as far as Curacao.

The coastal provinces of the Netherlands can expect strong winds and heavy rain on Monday and Tuesday, according to meteorological institute KNMI. The institute issued a code yellow warning that is in place until 9:00 p.m. on Tuesday.

According to the KNMI, some areas may see over 50 millimeters of rain in 24 hours. This could result in flooding. The coastal areas in the west and northwest of the country can also expect winds of around 75 kilometers per hour this afternoon. 

Afternoon temperatures will climb to around 17 degrees Celsius.

At least 2,400 Dutch travelers are currently in the areas that will soon face the wrath of Hurricane Irma, according to travel agency TUI, NU.nl reports.

Around 1,600 Dutch are on Cuba and the Dominican Republic. They booked trips through TUI subsidiary Kras. The other 800 are in the American state of Florida.

TUI also has four travelers on Sint Maarten, where Hurricane Irma hit on Wednesday, leaving devastation in its wake. TUI managed to make contact with all four Dutch and they are doing well.

Photos and videos posted on social media as they eye of Hurricane Irma passed over Sint Maarten show that the hurricane already did massive amounts of damage on the island. Despite the fact that the island is still on lockdown, and no one is allowed outside, the effects of the hurricane are becoming increasingly visible.

hit the island of Sint Maarten around 12:10 p.m. on Wednesday, Dutch time. The hurricane's eye is expected to pass the island between 1:00 p.m. and 2:00 p.m., NU.nl reports.

According to Weerplaza, the island can expect wind speeds of around 295 kilometers per hour, with even stronger gusts. The hurricane is also accompanied by heavy rains, which can cause flooding problems.

Sint Maarten, Sint Eustatius and Saba are preparing for Hurricane Irma, which is expected to hit the islands on Tuesday night or during the early hours of Wednesday morning. The storm is increasing in strength and is now considered a hurricane of the fourth category, RTL Nieuws reports.

Wednesday was a wet and rainy day for the Netherlands. According to Weeronline, between 40 and 45 millimeters of rain fell in the west of Zuid-Holland, the north of Noord-Holland and on the Wadden islands. That's about half of what is usual for the entire month of August.

By Wednesday night Leeuwarden had the most rain, with 52.2 millimeters measured. Places like Grouw and Stavoren also got over 50 millimeters of rain. "Locally the total rainfall can climb up to 60 mm by [Thursday] morning", the weather agency said on Wednesday night.

Tropical weather in the Netherlands on Tuesday sent many people to the water to cool down. This did not work out well for everyone. At least three people drowned while swimming on Tuesday.

A 14-year-old boy in Eindhoven on Tuesday afternoon. Police divers took his body out of the water around 2:00 p.m. Attempts to resuscitate him were unsuccessful.

Today is expected to be the first tropically warm day in the Netherlands since July 19th, according to Weeronline. Temperatures in Zeeland, Noord-Brabant, Limburg and the Achterhoek are expected to range between 30 and 32 degrees. 

And with a maximum temperature of around 29 degrees expected in De Bilt, today stands a good chance of breaking the record for the hottest August 29th since temperature measurements started. The previous record dates back to 1930, when 29.3 degrees were measured in De Bilt.

Monday and Tuesday are expected to be hot and sunny across the Netherlands, with temperatures up to 32 degrees on Tuesday, Weeronline predicts. Though by Wednesday, rain is expected to drive the summer weather away for a while.

Monday started out foggy, but temperatures will rise during the course of the day. Maximum temperatures will range from 22 degrees in the north to around 29 degrees in the south of the country.

The first summery weather of the month hit the Netherlands on Wednesday. The nice weather sent many Dutch flocking to the coast, for some swimming and sunbathing before autumn strikes, the Telegraaf reports.

Zuid-Holland, Zeeland, Noord-Brabant and Limburg can expect maximum temperatures around 29 degrees today. The northern provinces are somewhat cooler with temperatures ranging between 23 and 25 degrees.

The Netherlands public works department Rijkswaterstaat is already stocking up on salt for the winter season. The first salt shipment, containing 3 million kilograms of salt, will arrive at the Rijkswaterstaat salt warehouse in Raamdonksveer on Tuesday, ANP reports. 

In total the Rijkswaterstaat is supplementing its stockpiles with 75 million kilograms of salt, up to a total of over 200 million kilograms. The salt is stored in four central warehouses and 56 regional support points.

A group of 200 Dutch tourists are among thousands stuck on the Portuguese island of Madeira since Saturday. The flight set to bring the Dutch tourists home couldn't take off from Funchal Airport on Saturday due to heavy winds. An airplane sent to pick up the stranded tourists on Monday tried to land three times in vain, a spokesperson for TUI said to the Telegraaf.

Dozens of flights had to be canceled because the planes couldn't land or takeoff due to the weather. A total of around 6 thousand people are stranded on the island.

The Dutch weather services expect strong winds along the coast this afternoon. Campers and water sporters, like surfers or sailors, are warned to be careful.

The KNMI issued a code yellow weather warning, taking effect from 2:00 p.m. Gusts of up to 80 kilometers per hour are expected along the coast. Further inland will also be windy, but Weerplaza doesn't expect it to cause problems there.
