Code yellow storm warning: Lightning, wind gusts up to 70 km/h predicted today

The showers moving across the Netherlands on Tuesday morning will turn into thunderstorms by the afternoon, according to the KNMI forecast. The meteorological institute issued a code yellow warning for the entire country except Zeeland. Expect lightning, wind gusts up to 70 kilometers per hour, and hail. Some places may also experience heavy downpours.

“This afternoon, heavier thunderstorms will develop over the southwest. These thunderstorms will move toward the northeast during the afternoon, becoming more severe in the process,” the KNMI said. The code yellow warning takes effect first in Limburg and Noord-Brabant at 1:00 p.m. and should end in the Wadden area around 7:00 p.m.

“In addition to lightning strikes, there is a local risk of damage and disruption due to wind gusts and heavy rain, particularly in the northeastern half,” the KNMI said, warning of gusts up to 70 kilometers per hour, hail with a diameter of 1 to 2 centimeters, and 20 to 30 millimeters of rain falling in a short time. “The showers will leave the northeast in the first half of the evening.”

Maximum temperatures will climb to 20 degrees Celsius in the southwest and up to 25 degrees Celsius in the northeast. After the thunderstorms, it will cool down to around 17 degrees.

Wednesday will be partly cloudy with occasional showers and maximums ranging between 16 and 20 degrees Celsius, west to east. The wind will come from the southwest and will be moderate, fairly strong along the coast.

The KNMI expects showers every day through Friday. Thursday will be particularly rainy, with a good chance of thunderstorms and quite a lot of wind.

“Over the weekend, the chance of showers decreases, and there will be more sunshine. The afternoon temperature will be around 20 degrees Celsius, approximately the long-term average,” the meteorological institute said.
