Small, but intense local thunderstorms with hail and strong winds caused nuisance and damage in various places in the Netherlands on Tuesday evening.

Around Leerdam, cars, houses and gardens were damaged by rain and hail, RTV Utrecht reports. A number of trees toppled over across roads and had to be removed by the fire brigade. In Oudewater a scouting club lost their tents thanks to the strong winds. No one was injured.

Multiple fires were caused by lightning strikes while thunderstorms raged across the Netherlands on Wednesday. No one was hurt in the fires. An 18-year-old student was struck by lightning at a military base in Ossendrecht. He was admitted to a burns center in Antwerp with burns and severe damage to his lungs, his school reported.

Wednesday will be dry and hot in most of the Netherlands, until the afternoon at least. During the afternoon and evening, thunderstorms with hail and strong winds will move happen the country. The southwest of the Netherlands may already see thunderstorms in the morning. Meteorological institute KNMI issued a code yellow warning.

This morning storms entered the southwest of the country from Belgium, bringing with them a chance of hail and wind gusts up to 60 kilometers per hour. The showers will lighten and stop during the course of the morning, according to the KNMI.

The Netherlands will face more thunderstorms during the course of Monday afternoon and evening. Meteorological institute KNMI issued a code yellow warning for the entire country, warning that the storms may be accompanied by strong winds and hail.

High winds were expected all day throughout the Netherlands, prompting the fourth straight day of inclement weather warnings from the national meteorological agency KNMI. Operations at Schiphol Airport in Amsterdam showed only a handful of cancellations but dozens of delays.

KNMI issued a code yellow weather alert for Noord-Holland and the Wadden Sea islands, Friesland, Zuid-Holland, Zeeland, and Limburg. Gusts of wind out of the southwest were expected to be between 75 km/h and 90 km/h, the agency said.

More thunderstorms are approaching the Netherlands, expected to first hit the southwest of the country during the second half of the afternoon. Meteorological institute issued a code yellow warning for the entire country, warning of downpours, hail and strong winds.

The storms will move from southwest to northeast across the country. Gusts of up to 100 kilometers per hour are expected. "Traffic and outside activities can be hindered. Avoid open water and open areas, do not shelter under trees. Follow weather reports and warnings", the KNMI said.

The coming holiday weekend will see very changeable weather in the Netherlands, according to Weeronline. Starting with a hot and stormy Friday, the weather will shift to cooler temperatures and a mix of sunshine and rain on Saturday and Sunday, and then back to thunderstorms on Monday, the weather service expects.

Some 72,500 lightning flashes were counted in Dutch skies while thunderstorms moved across the country on Wednesday night and during the early hours of Thursday morning, according to Weeronline. The storms also brought with them heavy downpours and strong winds.

The showers started on Wednesday evening above the northern parts of France and then melted together into a large storm complex, according to the weather service. The storms reached the south of the Netherlands late in the evening and then moved across the country in a north to northwesterly direction.

A second night of thunderstorms resulted in reports of damages and flooding throughout the Netherlands. Five people were injured in Amsterdam during the storm. One of them was hit by a falling tree. None of the injuries are very serious, NOS reports.

A category F1 tornado hit the Gelderland town of Rheden on Tuesday, meteorologist of the weather institute in Wageningen concluded after going to investigate the a path of destruction of what was initially called a whirlwind, which was between four and five kilometers in length. More and more storm damage reports are coming in from across the country. Insurer Interpolis alone already received 230 damage reports, six times more than usual after a storm, a spokesperson said to AD.

After severe thunderstorms left a trail of damage across the Netherlands on Tuesday night, another area of thunderstorms is approaching the country. The first thunderstorms will hit the southernmost part of the Netherlands at around 11:00 p.m., and move across the country during the early hours of Thursday morning, according to Weeronline.

After weeks of drought, parts of Zuid- and Midden-Nederland were hit by a rain storm on Thursday evening. One person was killed and one injured in Rotterdam when a tree fell on their car. In Gelderland thousands of homes were without power for a few hours. And Roosendaal was hit by a whirlwind, NOS and AD report.

Meteorological institute KNMI issued a code yellow warning for Noord-Brabant, Zuid-Holland, Zeeland, Gelderland and Utrecht on Thursday night. The service predicted thunderstorms, with gusts up to 70 kilometers per hour and hailstones up to 2 centimeters.

The thunderstorms that raged across the Netherlands this week caused between 5 million and 10 million euros worth of damage to homes in the Netherlands, according to insurers' union VNV. Damages to cars, government buildings and the agriculture sector are not yet included in that amount, RTL Nieuws reports.

The damages are difficult to estimate, because the storms involved very local showers. But the damages don't seem to be very severe, according to VNV. This is mainly because there was little hail. Hailstones cause a lot of damage to cars, agricultural crops and greenhouses.

Thunderstorms are raging across the Netherlands on Thursday. Meteorological institute KNMI issued a code orange weather warning for the provinces of Noord-Holland, Flevoland and the IJsselmeergebied just after noon. A code yellow warning is in effect for the rest of the country.

The KNMI warns people in the code orange area of hail stones between 2 and 4 centimeters, wind gusts of around 75 kilometers an hour, and a lot of rain that can result in flooding. 

More heavy thunderstorms may develop in the coming hours, especially in the north of the country.

Meteorological institute KNMI issued a code yellow weather warning for thunderstorms in the Netherlands on Tuesday afternoon and evening. Storms accompanied by strong winds and hail are expected to cause traffic problems during evening rush hour.

The code yellow warning is in effect for the entire country, starting on the west coast from 4:00 p.m. The storms are expected to leave through the north east of the country around midnight.

The storms may be accompanied by lightning, hail and strong winds blowing between 75 and 90 kilometers per hour, according to Weeronline.
