Code yellow issued in Limburg as thunderstorms threaten heavy rain, hail, and wind
The Royal Netherlands Meteorological Institute (KNMI) has issued a code yellow weather warning for Limburg on Saturday due to expected thunderstorms later in the afternoon. The storms are forecast to bring heavy rainfall in a short time, hailstones up to 2 centimeters in diameter, and wind gusts reaching approximately 60 kilometers per hour.
These weather conditions may disrupt traffic and outdoor activities across the province. In the hilly areas of Limburg, localized flooding is also possible, according to the KNMI.
Despite the thunderstorms, Saturday will be a summer-like day across much of the Netherlands. Temperatures are expected to reach between 25 and 28 degrees in many places. With little wind and ample sunshine, the day will feel distinctly summery.
This marks an unseasonably warm day for the end of May. According to Weeronline, typical temperatures for this time of year range between 17 and 21 degrees. While Saturday stands out with its summer heat, the meteorological summer officially begins on Sunday with more moderate weather conditions.
On Sunday, temperatures will range from 18 to 23 degrees, which Weeronline describes as normal for early June. A localized shower may occur in the interior of the country, but overall the day is expected to remain dry.
The forecast for the first week of June is unsettled, with intermittent rain and variable conditions. The wind is expected to blow mostly from the sea, limiting the arrival of summer warmth and keeping daytime highs around 20 degrees. However, meteorologists predict that the second half of June will bring higher temperatures. If the wind shifts to come from the south, temperatures could rise to around 25 degrees.
