Storm Amy triggers nationwide Code Yellow in Netherlands

The KNMI expanded its Code Yellow weather warning to the entire Netherlands on Saturday as storm Amy brought strong wind gusts across the country.

The national weather institute said Limburg could face short bursts of severe gusts up to 80 kilometers per hour until 9 a.m. before conditions temporarily calmed.

Later in the morning and into the afternoon, winds are expected to intensify again, first along the western coast and then moving inland. By evening, only coastal areas are forecast to face severe gusts. In the northern coastal region, the risk is expected to continue until Sunday afternoon, while winds in other areas would ease earlier.

The KNMI reported that gusts would come from the west to southwest. From 10 a.m., coastal areas were forecast to experience gusts of 80 to 90 kilometers per hour. Later in the afternoon and early evening, gusts of 90 to 100 kilometers per hour were possible directly along the sea. Inland areas could see gusts around 75 kilometers per hour during the afternoon. Winds were expected to decrease from the south on Sunday.

Earlier, Code Yellow had been issued for Zeeland, Noord-Brabant, Zuid-Holland, Noord-Holland, Friesland, the IJsselmeer area, the Wadden Sea, and the Wadden Islands. It was later expanded to include Utrecht, Gelderland, Limburg, and Flevoland, before being extended nationwide Saturday morning.
