Thunderstorms, hail and heavy rain trigger nationwide code yellow in Netherlands

The Royal Netherlands Meteorological Institute (KNMI) has issued a code yellow weather warning for the entire country on Monday, in effect until 9 p.m., due to the risk of thunderstorms, heavy rain, hail, and wind gusts.

Localized downpours may produce up to 30 millimeters of rain per hour, according to KNMI. Some storms could also bring hail and wind gusts reaching speeds of up to 60 kilometers per hour.

KNMI warned that the intense showers may cause disruptions to traffic and outdoor activities due to flooding and the potential for falling branches. “The showers may vary regionally,” the agency said, noting that the overall impact will remain limited in many areas.

The thunderstorms are expected to gradually weaken during the evening, starting in the southwest and easing last in the east.
