A code yellow weather warning for strong winds is currently in effect for most of the Netherlands. Only Friesland and Groningen are not affected. According to meteorological institute KNMI, the rest of the country can expect gusts of up to 90 kilometers per hour.

This could have consequences for traffic and outside activities, the KNMI warns. "Follow weather forecasts and warnings."

Meteorological institute KNMI triggered a code yellow weather warning because of a storm that is expected to hit the Netherlands on Monday afternoon. The storm will bring strong winds and heavy rainfall with it, according to the institute.

The code yellow warning applies to the entire Netherlands and takes effect at 3:00 p.m. The storm will hit the southwest of the country first before spreading across the rest of the Netherlands. Wind gusts of up to 75 kilometers per hour can be expected. The storm may also be accompanied by hail and lightning.

A massive storm is set to hit the Netherlands this afternoon, bringing with it winds of up to 130 kilometers per hour. The windy weather is expected to cause problems with all forms of transport in the country, from motor traffic to planes.

The strong winds will affect the entire country, but will be stronger on the west coast and around the IJsselmeer. Here the KNMI expects gusts of between 100 and 130 kilometers per hour. The rest of the country can expect gusts of between 75 and 100 km/h.

Traffic information services ANWB and VID also warned of icy roads. Both reported several traffic accidents already, though it is unclear whether any of these are related to the slickness on the roads.

Winter weather is back in the Netherlands and with that meteorological institute KNMI issued a code yellow warning for icy roads this morning. The warning affects the northern half of the country.

According to the KNMI, motorists should be especially careful on local roads which salt trucks and gritters don't always reach. In Noord-Holland and Twente the roads may also be slippery due to snow. The slickness should melt away by the end of the morning. Light snow is expected in the afternoon, though it will likely melt away before causing problems.

A very busy morning rush hour is expected due to a combination of slick, icy roads and a continuing power outage in Amsterdam and surrounds. Utilities company Liander expects to have power restored completely around 8:00 a.m. 

Due to the power outage, the matrix boards around the Dutch capital are not working. "We can't put any information above the road", a spokesperson for the Dutch public works Rijkswaterstaat said to RTL. Street lights are also not working. Motorists should extra travel time into account

The winter weather conditions are causing trouble for passengers. Schiphol airports expects flight delays due to strong winds. And train traffic in the Netherlands already encountered several problems due to snow and icy tracks. 

"Due to strong winds, flights from/to Schiphol might be delayed. Check your airline for flight information", Schipphol wrote on Twitter.

Snow, storms and heavy winds are heading towards the Netherlands tonight and tomorrow, Weeronline predicts. Some inland areas including the Veluwe, the Sallandse Heuvelrug, the Limgburg Heuvels, Twente and Achterhoek may even get 5 to 10 centimeters of snow tonight.

The Netherlands can expect a cold and rainy day on Thursday, according to meteorological institute KNMI. The southern half of the country may even see between 10 and 20 mm of rain. During the course of the night, the rain is expected to turn into snow.

According to the meteorological institute, the morning will start out cloudy with scattered showers. The cloud cover and rain will increase during the course of the day. Tonight the center, east and south of the country can expect enough snow to at least emporarily cover the ground. Maximum temperatures will be around 7 degrees.

Icy roads caused numerous accidents across the Netherlands on Tuesday morning, despite a warning from meteorological institute KNMI for drivers to slow down and keep safe following distances. The code yellow weather warning affected the entire country except for the Wadden islands.

According to traffic information service VID, there were "various" accidents on the A58 highway near Heinkenszand due to icy, slippery roads. There were also accidents on the A16 near Breda Noord, on the A9 towards Alkaar near Badhoevendorp and on the A2 near Utrecht.

According to the KNMI, in some places visibility will be reduced to less than 200 meters. Local roads in particular may be icy and slick, as gritters don't always reach them.

The Netherlands can expect a stormy Boxing Day today, following the third warmest Christmas Day in the country since temperature measurements started in 1901.

According to Weerplaza, Sunday was the third mildest Christmas day in the Netherlands with temperatures reaching 12 degrees towards the end of the Day. Only last year, with 14 degrees, and 1997 with 12.8 degrees were hotter.
