Foggy, icy morning: Several car crashes across the Netherlands on Monday

A large portion of the Netherlands was under a Code Yellow weather warning for dense fog and icy roads on Monday, according to national meteorological institute KNMI. The warning started in the northern provinces, and eventually covered the rest of the country.

"Slippery conditions are expected in central and southern regions this morning due to freezing sections of wet roads and/or freezing fog. The slippery conditions can be localized and treacherous," the KNMI wrote in a statement.

Conditions returned to normal in Drenthe, Flevoland, Friesland, Groningen, and Noord-Holland. By 9 a.m., the warning remained in effect in Gelderland, Limburg, Noord-Brabant, Overijssel, Utrecht, Zeeland, and Zuid-Holland. The alert was likely to be lifted by the end of the morning.

"Slippery conditions may last until late morning in the south. In central areas, the slippery conditions will likely disappear sooner," the KNMI said.

With the freezing conditions on the roads, several car crashes were reported in various parts of the Netherlands. Several incidents in Gelderland were reported by the regional broadcaster there, including a vehicle that wound up submerged in a canal in Eerbeek. The driver and a passenger managed to get out of that crash.

One person was injured when a car left the road at an roundabout, in Beneden-Leeuwen, and crashed down the embankment. Firefighters freed one injured person who was trapped in the vehicle. Three others were checked by paramedics at the scene. It was not clear if there were any arrests.

One car skidded off the road at a curve on Beldershoekweg between Boekelo and Hengelo, according to RTV Oost. The vehicle then careened head-on into a tree. It was not known if the driver was injured.

Another driver lost control of her car on the icy cobblestones of the Stationstraat in Deventer. The woman was uninjured after crashing her car into a railroad viaduct.

The driver of a car exiting the A13 towards the Delft city center also lost control of their vehicle on Oostpoortweg, and crashed into a tree. At least one person was treated at the scene by paramedics, according to Omroep West.

Another driver was hospitalized after a rollover crash on Broeksteeg in Mariahout, Omroep Brabant reported. First responders were at the scene shortly after 7 a.m., when the vehicle landed on its roof in a ditch.

Another vehicle overturned on the N607 near Bakel in Noord-Brabant about three hours earlier. The woman driving that vehicle was pulled from the wreckage uninjured. Icy roads were believed to be responsible, police in Helmond said.

The driver of another car in Doesberg also lost control and crashed up onto a sidewalk in the Gelderland village. Although the vehicle was badly damaged when it crashed into a tree in front of a house, the woman behind the wheel was not injured
