Code yellow alert issued across large parts of Netherlands for thunderstorms and wind

The Royal Netherlands Meteorological Institute (KNMI) issued a yellow weather alert Saturday for heavy thunderstorms across most of the country, including Zeeland, Zuid-Holland, Noord-Brabant, Limburg, Utrecht, Gelderland, Overijssel, and Drenthe.

In Noord-Brabant, Gelderland, Overijssel, and Drenthe, the warning is valid until 8 p.m., while in Limburg it remains in effect until 9 p.m. In Zeeland, Zuid-Holland, and Utrecht, the alert expires at 6 p.m. Earlier yellow alerts for Noord-Holland, Flevoland, and Friesland have now expired.

The thunderstorms may produce hail up to 1 centimeter in diameter and wind gusts reaching 70 kilometers per hour. A separate yellow alert was in place Friday afternoon for the northeast of the country. The showers are expected to mostly move away by evening, leaving many areas dry on Sunday.

Unsettled weather will return overnight Sunday into Monday. KNMI has issued another yellow alert from midnight to 1 p.m. Monday for Noord-Holland, the Waddeneilanden, and the IJsselmeer area due to wind gusts up to 80 kilometers per hour.

Weerplaza meteorologists said the unstable conditions are caused by a strong jet stream above the Atlantic Ocean, bringing continued wind and rain through at least Thursday.
