Wind gusts up to 100 km/h prompts warning lasting into Wednesday morning
Strong wind gusts are forecast by the KNMI for Tuesday night into Wednesday, prompting a nationwide Code Yellow alert. The specific times differ depending on the province.
Winds are expected to strengthen through the afternoon and evening. The northwestern coast may experience severe gusts of 90 to 100 kilometers per hour, while inland areas could see gusts of 70 to 80 kilometers per hour when heavy rain fronts pass.
The KNMI advises caution for outdoor activities, as traffic disruptions are possible. The heaviest showers may greatly reduce visibility, posing extra hazards for drivers.
In Noord-Holland, Friesland, and the Wadden region, gusts of 90 to 100 km/h are most likely. Particular alerts have been issued for Vlissingen, Hoek van Holland, IJmuiden, Texel, and Harlingen.
The wind will start out from the southwest tonight but is expected to turn northwest by early Wednesday morning. The KNMI anticipates that conditions will improve by Wednesday morning.
The most severe gusts are expected primarily when a strong cold front moves through, accompanied by scattered March showers. Wind gusts along the northwestern coast may reach storm force 9 on the Beaufort scale in some areas, with similarly strong winds of 8 to 9 Bft over the North Sea.
The KNMI recommends securing or moving any loose items indoors, like garden furniture, flower pots, and ornaments, to avoid damage from wind-blown objects. Besides potential wind-related road delays, travelers should watch out for debris, like branches, on roads and train tracks.
