Hans van den Berg, vice-chairman Tata Steel Netherlands (TSN) in IJmuiden, will step into the shoes of former chairman Theo Henrar as the company's new chief, the steel giant announced this week.

"A logical choice," TSN's Central Works Council chairman Frits van Wieringen told the newspaper De Telegraaf. "The management consisted of three people, but now that Theo Henrar has been fired, Van den Berg will be his successor. We now have to wait until a new board member is appointed."

A group of around 100 Tata Steel employees blocked the gate to the company site with trucks on Tuesday morning, causing quite the traffic jam in Velsen-Noord. The workers are protesting the departure of Theo Henrar, who announced last week that he is leaving the steel giant after 33 years, NH Nieuws reports.

Two enforcement officers were attacked by a group of young people on the beach in IJmuiden on Thursday afternoon. One was taken to hospital with an injury to his face. The police arrested two suspects and are looking for a third.

Social distancing restrictions will again be tightened in the Netherlands if the crowds which gathered in celebration of an incredibly sunny Ascension Day are any indication of the upcoming summer, said Hubert Bruls, who chairs the council which oversees the country's 25 emergency services regions. "If this is the picture of summer, we'll have a summer with a lot of limitations," said Bruls, who also serves as the mayor of Nijmegen.

Beaches and other recreation areas in the Netherlands started streaming full early on a warm and sunny Ascension Day on Thursday. Various security regions had to take measures to try and disperse the crowds, including closing roads towards beaches.

Various access roads to the beaches of Bloemendaal, Heemskerk, Wijk aan Zee, IJmuiden, and Zandvoort were closed down to car traffic, Veiligheidsregio Kennemerland announced. The road to Castricum beach was also closed, according to NOS. Veiligheidsregio Zeeland closed down the boulevards in Vlissingen.

A dolphin was spotted swimming in the IJmuiden port in Amsterdam on Sunday. With some major effort, SOS Dolfijn managed to guide the animal back to the ocean, the rescue organization for sea animals said on Twitter.

SOS Dolfijn can't say for certain that the dolphin isn't still swimming around the Dutch coast and calls on people who may encounter it not to try to interact with the dolphin and to notify the organization.

A 21-year-old man was rushed to the hospital Monday after a stabbing near the Molenduin secondary school in Santpoort-Noord. The stabbing occurred at around 1:30 p.m. on Dinkgrevelaan, and police later announced several people were in custody.

Customs officers at the port of Vlissingen intercepted 921 kilograms of cocaine on Tuesday. The drugs were hidden in a container of bananas that came from Ecuador, the police said in a statement.

The drugs were discovered with a mobile scan. The police seized and destroyed the cocaine. So far no arrests were made. 

The police are investigating.

A woman from Iran drowned on the Channel between France and England and was found in Dutch waters. Her body was discovered a few dozen kilometers off the coast of IJmuiden in August, NOS reports. Two suspected human traffickers will appear in court in France on Wednesday.

As far as is known, this was the first time that the body of a drowned migrant was discovered in Dutch waters. The suspects are a Dutch-Guinean man and a man from Afghanistan. They were arrested in October and face 10 years in prison for assisting undocumented migrants and manslaughter, the broadcaster writes.

Employees of steel producer Tata Steel gathered on the parking lot of FC Velsenoord in Velsen-Noord on Tuesday morning to protest against announced layoffs at the steel factory in IJmuiden. The employees are gathered to hear what managers of union FNV and the chairman of the company's Central Works Council have to say about their future, NH Nieuws reports.

Tata Steel announced that its factory in IJmuiden will be hit hard by the company's reorganization in Europe. Of the 3 thousand expected layoffs, around 1,600 will happen in the Netherlands, the company confirmed, NOS reports.

Tata Steel is planning to scrap some 3 thousand jobs in Europe, European CEO of Tata Steel Hendrik Adam confirmed. Some 1,500 of the 11 thousand Tata Steel jobs in the Netherlands will be lost, a well-informed source within the company confirmed to RTL Z.

Sixteen undocumented migrants were found hiding in the back of a truck at the port of IJmuiden on Thursday. Among them were four children, one woman and eleven men, of various nationalities, the Koninklijke Marechaussee, a military policing force tasked with border security, said on Facebook. 

An employee at the port, who asked to remain anonymous, told NH Nieuws that the children were "no older than around 8". He was there when the truck was opened. "There stood a small boy with a teddy bear in his hands", the port worker said.

One person was killed, and separately a portion of the AFAS Stadion roof collapsed as heavy winds gripped the Netherlands on Saturday. Wind gusts in IJmuiden, at the North Sea coast, even topped 104 kilometers per hour.

A bicyclist died at about 2:30 p.m. in Linschoten, Utrecht, when the heavy winds toppled a tree, which sent it crashing down on a bike path along the Haardijk. The tree struck the victim, a 58-year-old man from Lopik, a town 15 kilometers away from the accident.

Dutch rescue organization KNRM rescued a man on a self-made raft from the North Sea, off the coast of IJmuiden, on Sunday. .The organization believes the 26-year-old man from Eritrea was trying to sail from IJmuiden to England. He was transferred to the Koninklijke Marechaussee, a policing force that works as part of the Dutch military and is responsible for border security, NH Nieuws reports.

Four people were injured Wednesday morning when an explosion took place at a Tata Steel facility in Velsen-Noord, Noord Holland. All four of the victims are employees who were transported to area hospitals, the company said. Their injuries were not specified, but were not believed to be life threatening, a Tata Steel spokesperson told several news outlets.

South Korean company Geosung Tech is threatening to seize the doors of the new sea lock in IJmuiden. The company, which built the doors, is in the midst of a financial clash with Dutch construction consortium OpenIJ, which consists of VolkerWessels and BAM, Financieele Dagblad and Cobouw report.

The steel doors, which are 72 meters long, 24 meters high and 11 meters wide, arrived in IJmuiden last month - around 8 months later than planned, partly due to the bankruptcy of one of Geosung Tech's subcontractors.

The construction of a new sea lock in IJmuiden will take 27 months longer than expected, public works department Rijkswaterstaat announced on Tuesday evening. Builders BAM and VolkerWessels are again pushing millions more into the construction, ANP reports.

BAM reports a cost overrun of around 30 million euros, VolkerWessels 31.5 million euros. It is now expected that the first ships will only be able to use the sea lock in January 2022, instead of next year.

Entrepreneurs and residents living around Schiphol composed a proposal to expand the airport into the ocean. The North Sea still has plenty of space and noise will not cause any inconvenience there, according to the proposal. Such a 'sea runway' will bring relief to the entire Haarlemmermeer, the Telegraaf reports.

According to the proposal, an 'IJ-plain' should be constructed in the North Sea near IJmuiden for a new runway for Schiphol. It can eventually also be used to move other noisy runways, such as Buitenveldert and Aalsmeer, away from the airport.

Tata Steel, the parent company of the steel plant in IJmuiden, and the German ThyssenKrupp are merging their European Steelworks. The two companies expect that the merge will result in the loss of 4 thousand jobs throughout Europe, they said in a joint statement, AD reports.

Half of the jobs will be lost in the production branch and the other half in the administrative branch. The job losses will be distributed evenly across the two companies. The consequences for jobs in the IJmuiden plant, were not specified.

Dutch harbors with ferries to England are increasingly faced with Albanians trying to secretly cross to the United Kingdom, according to the Volkskrant. Over the past few months, hundreds of Albanian stowaways were caught in IJmuiden, Hoek van Holland, Europoort and Vlissingen. 

While the number of caught stowaways is comparable to last year - 440 in the first half of this year - the proportion of Albanians among them is increasing steadily, especially in Hoek van Holland and Europoort. In those two ports 92 percent of the caught stowaways were Albanian.

On Wednesday the police searched two homes in IJmuiden in the search for a man believed to be involved in the death of an 18-year-old man from Haarlem. The victim was found dead in a car, across the street from a hospital in Haarlem on Monday.

The suspect was not found in either of the addresses, the police said in a statement. Investigators did seize a number of digital storage devices for further investigation.

A body found in a red Mercedes on the street in Haarlem on Monday morning was identified as 18-year-old Kemal Budak from Haarlem. According to the Telegraaf, the evidence points to Budak being stabbed in IJmuiden and then left critically injured in front of the hospital in Haarlem. He died before being found.

The car in which Budak's body was found was parked at the intersection of Kadijklaan and Roolandweg, across the street from the Spaarne hospital. Budak's was lying on the back seat.

On Thursday night the police raided the Hells Angels clubhouse on Baljuwslaan and arrested a total of 10 people. The suspects include nine men and one woman. According to the police, the 9 men make up the entire Haarlem chapter of the outlaw motorcycle gang, ANP reports.

The men are aged between 35 and 64 years and come from Haarlem, Leiden, Gouda, Alkmaar and IJmuiden. They are all suspected of participation in a criminal organization. Some are also suspected of extortion, threats, violence and arson.
