The Ministry of Defense deployed 100 soldiers to assist in cleaning up sea containers and their content that washed ashore on the Wadden Islands. Some 270 containers fell from cargo ship MSC Zoe near Germany during the early hours of Wednesday morning. Around 35 containers washed ashore on the Wadden Islands. Friesland and Groningen on the mainland also found containers and their content, NU.nl reports.

The soldiers will start cleaning up the beaches on the Wadden Islands on Friday. Some soldiers had to come back from their Christmas holidays to help, according to the newspaper.

The court in Brussels convicted 84-year-old Belgian castle lord Marc d. V. G. of sexually abusing a number of teenage boys between 1996 and 2013 and sentenced him to eight years in prison. A number of these abuses happened on his boat on the Wadden sea in the Netherlands, Het Laatste Nieuws reports.

The Dutch government should do more to protect historic shipwrecks in the Wadden Sea and North Sea from looters, tides and mussel bank constructions, the five coastal provinces wrote in a letter to Minister Jet Bussemaker of Education, Culture and Science. If there is no intervention, hundreds of those historic shipwrecks and their sometimes precious cargo may be lost, they write, NOS reports.

The provinces want an investigation to be done to map the status of the shipwrecks. Based on the results, the necessary measures can be taken.

The Wadden area may well be permanently under water before the end of this century, according to a study by TU Delft and Utrecht University on behalf or the Wadden Association. Dutch meteorological office KNMI terminated its warnings for icy roads in the northeast of the country. The weather office was joined by motorist association ANWB and infrastructure agency Rijkswaterstaat in calls for drivers to stay off the roads in the provinces of Friesland, Groningen and Drenthe.

The Dutch Mussel Bureau officially opened the new mussel season on Wednesday. Symbolically the first basket of mussels was fished out in the Oosterschelde with a mussel trawler. The new crop will be available in supermarkets and restaurants starting this week.

Visitors to beaches in Ameland and Schiermonnikoog were advised to get somewhere safe at 9:30 a.m. Thursday morning after multiple waterspouts were spotted over the Wadden Sea. Several hundred meters high, onlookers tweeted spectacular photos of the spouts whirling into the sky.

It was remarkably crowded at the Holwerd pier last Sunday the 15th. Over a hundred and fifty people had gathered to participate in the popular Dutch mudflat hiking. Called ‘wadlooptocht’, this recreation is a walk from Holwerd to Ameland, wading in the waters of the mudflats of the Wadden Sea. Mudflat hiking is a unique activity that only can be experienced in a few parts of Europe.

Five chunks of amber weighing a total of 83 kilograms were found in the body of a sperm whale, and may have be the reason that the animal washed ashore last December on a sandy plain in Texel, Noord Holland. Taxidermist Mickel van Leeuwen announced the findings after investigating the mammal's remains.
