Code Yellow: Thunderstorms in east Netherlands Friday afternoon; Cooler weather ahead
Thunderstorms will hit the eastern half of the Netherlands later this afternoon, triggering a code yellow warning. Be prepared for gusts up to 75 km/h, hailstones up to 2 centimeters, and between 20 and 40 millimeters of rain in an hour, the KNMI warned. The current hot weather will continue until Sunday, after which maximums will gradually drop to around 18 degrees Celsius on Thursday, the meteorological institute forecast.
“Later this afternoon, heavy thunderstorms may develop, particularly in the southeast and east,” the KNMI warned. “These storms could cause local disruption and damage due to heavy rain in a short period, wind gusts, and large hailstones.”
The storms will move away towards Germany during the course of the evening. The code yellow warning is in effect from 4:00 p.m. until 10:00 p.m. for Limburg, Noord-Brabant, Gelderland, Overijssel, Drenthe, and Groningen.
Friday will be a mix of sunshine and clouds until the thunderstorms start in the second half of the afternoon. Maximums will range between 24 degrees in the Wadden area to 32 degrees in the east and southeast of the country. Apart from wind gusts during the storms, the westerly wind is light to moderate.
Saturday will be partly sunny and dry in most of the country. Limburg could see some showers, which may turn into thunderstorms in the afternoon. Maximums will range between 20 degrees in the Wadden area to 28 degrees in Zuid-Limburg.
After that, the Netherlands can expect occasional sunshine and, from Tuesday onwards, frequent rain and thunderstorms. “Sunday will still be quite warm, after which afternoon temperatures will gradually drop to 18°C on Thursday,” the KNMI said.
