Minor tornado starts long weekend in Eersel; Chilly holiday expected
A minor tornado caused significant damage in Eersel, Noord-Brabant, on Wednesday afternoon, blowing roof tiles off several homes and knocking over dozens of trees. One tree fell onto the N397. The Ascension Day long weekend will be chilly with showers, but also some room for sunshine, the KNMI expects.
As far as is known, no one got hurt in the tornado, Omroep Brabant reported. But it did leave a trail of cars damaged by broken branches, fallen trees, and fallen rooftiles. In a patch of forest near Tasbroekwegje, “the trees snapped like matchsticks,” a spokesperson for the municipality told the broadcaster.
Hoolhof, the Kerkebogten district, Visserstraat, and Kromme Molenweg were also hit hard. “It is clear that this involves a narrow, local area where the gust of wind wreaked havoc,” the spokesperson said.
No more tornadoes are expected for the long weekend, but the Netherlands will see showers and possibly some thunderstorms, according to the KNMI.
Thursday will be cloudy, but with some sunshine breaking through from time to time, especially in the northwest later in the afternoon. There will be showers in the central and southern parts of the country, and maximum temperatures will climb to around 13 degrees, with a moderate northerly wind.
Friday will be cloudy with showers across the country, though the south and central parts will see occasional sunshine in the afternoon. The KNMI expects maximums of around 12 degrees, well below the long-term average of 17.3 degrees for mid-May. The wind will blow from the west to northwest and will be moderate, except along the coast, where it can be strong.
The weekend will look much the same. “Changeable with some showers. Quite cool with temperatures well below the long-term average,” the KNMI said. Temperatures will start gradually rising from Sunday.
