Summer temps around the corner; Pentecost weekend could be top 10 warmest ever recorded

You might not believe it when you look outside today, but summer temperatures are around the corner for the Netherlands. In fact, Buienradar meteorologists expect the upcoming long weekend could rank among the top 10 warmest Pentecost weekends ever recorded. Though some places will be cooler than others, meteorologist Jordi Huirne told RTL Nieuws.

“If the temperature in De Bilt reaches at least 28.0 degrees on one of the Whitsun days, we will make the top 10 warmest Whitsun days since 1901,” Jordi said. He believes it is likely. Pentecost, also known as Whitsun in some countries and Pinksteren in the Netherlands, is a Christian holiday celebrated 50 days after Easter.

The transition will happen today, with cloud fields and sunshine alternating, and the sun gaining more and more ground. “The far north has a chance of a drizzle, but that is insignificant,” Huirne said. There will be little wind, and maximums will climb to between 21 and 24 degrees, a bit lower along the coast.

Thermometers will climb further on Friday, reaching 25 degrees in the north and 28 degrees in the south. “De Bilt will exceed 25 degrees for the first time this year, marking the first official summer day of 2025,” the meteorologist said. That’s about a week later than the May 14 average.

Saturday will be sunny and warm, with temperatures climbing to 27 degrees inland, and even up to 30 degrees in some places in the southeast. “Along the west coast and in the north, the wind will quickly shift from south to northwest in the afternoon,” Huirne said. “This much cooler sea breeze will bring the temperature down significantly, potentially causing it to cool down to below 20 degrees.” Some cloud cover may also form in the north, with maybe a shower or two.

The cold wind will persist in coastal areas on Sunday but will shift to the east on Monday, allowing warm air to reach the coast as well. Monday will see temperatures above 25 degrees in almost the entire country. Noord-Brabant and Limburg could reach 30 degrees.
