Young man shot dead near Vierdaagse party in Nijmegen; Suspect arrested
A young man was gunned down in Nijmegen on Tuesday night, just outside the area where the Vierdaagsefeesten were taking place. He died in the hospital. The police arrested a suspect.
The shooting happened at around 10:00 p.m. on Graafseweg, near Stijn Buysstraat. That is just outside the area designated for the Vierdaagsefeesten, the party that follows each day of the annual four-day walking event.
First responders found the young man wounded on the street. They provided first aid before rushing him to a hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries.
On Wednesday morning, the police reported that they had a suspect in custody. His involvement in the shooting is being investigated, the police said.
A police spokesperson told RTL Nieuws that there currently appears to be no link between the shooting and the Vierdaagsefeesten. “We can’t completely rule it out. But we currently consider it an isolated incident because it did not take place on the event grounds.”
The police have released no information about the suspect or victim’s identities, apart from a police spokesperson telling RTL that the victim was a young man.
