The 103rd edition of the Nijmegen Vierdaagse, known as the Four Day Marches in English, kicked off with 44,702 participants at 4:00 a.m. on Tuesday morning. On the first leg of the four-day walking event, participants will walk from Nijmegen through the Betuwe to Arnhem, NU.nl reports.
System problems caused frustration during registration for the Nijmegen Vierdaagse - an annual four days long hiking event - on Monday morning, De Gelderlander reports.
The Vierdaagse started at 10:00 a.m. on Monday. At the same time, potential participants received a message that they can re-register for the event on a first come, first serve basis. Many people tried to register online for one of the 1,744 spots still available in the event, but to no avail. The online registration module wasn't working, and hopeful participants could not pay their entry fee.
Rain gear was the order of the day for the first group of hikers kicking off the third day of the Nijmegen Vierdaagse. On Thursday the hikers were greeted by heavy rainfall and thunder when they started their hike on the Wedren in Nijmegen at 4:00 a.m., according to the Gelderlander.
King Willem-Alexander joined Vierdaagse marches in crossing a pontoon bridge over the Maas in Cuijk on the last day of the 100th edition of this four day walking event.

Traditionally the Vierdaagse started at the third Tuesday of July. A total of 42.493 participants started at the four day march.

Although usually people might find it a little bit early, the walkers were pleased that they could walk at least a few hours in the cold morning air. They knew that the mercury would hit the high twenties, so most people were well prepared for the heat.
The participants in the 97th edition of the Vierdaagse will face this year, in addition to the considerable distances they have to walk, another obstacle. During the coming days the temperature is probably going to be 26 or 27 degrees.
Participants of the Vierdaagse, which will start on Tuesday July 16, are advised to drink extra. Sun burn is also very likely so a good sun protection is advised. Because during the night the temperature can drop to 15 degrees, late night partiers are advised to bring a sweater.
