Dutch man missing on Lake Como after diving to save son; Small kids left on boat adrift
A search is underway on Lake Como in Italy for a missing Dutch tourist after he jumped from a rented boat into the water to help his son.
An Italian news agency, ANSA, said the man had rented the boat with his three children. Around 12:30 p.m., near the town of Menaggio, his oldest son, 16, dove into the water at a point where the lake depth increases rapidly from 25 meters to 100 meters.
When the teenager could no longer reach the boat on his own, his father jumped in after him to attempt a rescue. The man disappeared underwater and did not resurface.
The boat carrying the man's other two children, ages 8 and 6, drifted farther away, likely because of a strong current. The children managed to attract the attention of other boats. A passing boat then rescued the 16-year-old, while the father remained missing.
