The Avifauna bird park proudly welcomed a new resident. A baby kiwi recently hatched at the zoo. This is the first time ever that a kiwi is born in the Netherlands. Only 16 zoos around the world have a breeding program for kiwis. And Avifauna in Alphen aan den Rijn is the only zoo where a kiwi hatched this year, the zoo announced on Thursday.

A  24-year-old man from Utrecht was arrested for the murder of former criminal and crime writer in Laren in 2016.

The suspect was already detained in the prison in Alphen aan den Rijn on suspicion of another crime, RTL Nieuws reports. He was again arrested on Wednesday morning on suspicion of involvement in Kok's murder. He is in restricted custody, which means that he is only allowed contact with his lawyer.

Brave pupils of the Scala college in Alphen aan den Rijn chased a man waving two knives out of their school on Wednesday. No one was injured.

Video footage of the incident shows the man making stabbing motions towards the pupils at the school on Diamantstraat. A group of pupils chased him off by throwing their school bags at him.

Earlier this month the police responded to the prison in Alphen aan den Rijn en masse after a man threatened to shoot the prison staff with an automatic rifle, the Telegraaf reports based on a letter from prison management.

The incident happened on January 17th. Employees are seriously alarmed, the letter states. "As soon as this serious threat became known to the penitentiary institution, it was taken very seriously. The police came into action immediately. An investigation is ongoing", the Judicial Institutions Department explained to the newspaper.

Khalid T., a former PvdA city councilor in Gouda, is suspected of having sex with a 13-year-old girl in a hotel room. The Public Prosecutor is charging him with child sex abuse and removing a child from her parental authority, Omroep West reports.

According to the Public Prosecutor, 32-year-old man had oral sex with the girl and penetrated her.

Khalid T. was also the director of primary school An Noer in Alphen aan den Rijn. The girl was not a student at the school, according to the broadcaster.

Due to heavy snowfall expected across the Netherlands this afternoon, many schools decided to give their students the day off on Monday. These include the 23 secondary schools under the ZAAM foundation in Amsterdam and its surrounds, the 4e Gymnasium in Amsterdam, the Amadeus Lyceum in Vleuten, the Coornhert Gymnasiam in Gouda, and the Wellant College in Alphen aan den Rijn, NU.nl reports.

"An email has just been sent from the board that at 1:00 p.m. te doors will close in all schools of ZAAM", an employee of the Amsterdam-Zuid school community said to NU.nl.

A prisoner in the Alphen aan den Rijn prison was caught recording videos and posting them online with a smartphone that was smuggled into the prison. The prison directors discovered the videos on Instagram this week, a spokesperson for the Ministry of Security and Justice confirmed to NU.nl.

Immediately after the videos were discovered, multiple cells were searched. The prison guards found four cellphones with chargers and a small amount of soft drugs. Only one of the prisoners used a smartphone for vlogging, according to the news site.

Two men, aged 22 and 41 years, were injured in a shooting on a caravan camp in Alphen aan den Rijn on Saturday evening. Investigators know the identity of the suspected shooter, but he is still at large, the police said in a statement.

The shooting happened around 7:00 p.m. on the caravan camp on Goudse Rijpad, according to the police. The injured men were taken to hospital. They are not in life-threatening danger, according to information the police received on Saturday night.

According to the court, Van der Vlis' parents couldn't know beforehand that their son was planning the mass shooting, ANP reports.
