Marker Wadden island

The first island of the Marker Wadden will open to the public next week. From September 8th visitors can make use of the port, hiking trials, bird watching huts and the observation tower on the 250 hectares large island, RTL Nieuws reports.

Throughout next weekend extra ferries will sial to the island from the Bataviahaven in Lelystad. Private boats are also welcome.

Nature lovers who look forward to a purple Posbank each summer, will be disappointed this year, according to naturalist Gerrit Jansen. The heather that turns the hills purple with its blossoms is withered by the persistent drought and will hardly bloom this year, he said to De Gelderlander. 

Every year the purple glow over the hills of the Posbank - a national attraction - attracts thousands of visitors in the second half of August. This year they will be disappointed.

Over the past decades there's been a "dramatic" decline in the number of ground beetles and moths in two nature reserves in the Netherlands, according to Natuurmonumenten. The number of ground beetles declined by 72 percent in Wijster in Drenthe over the past 22 years, and the number of moths by 54 percent in Kaaistoep in Noord-Brabant over the past 20 years, NU.nl reports.

A woman from Boijl was attacked by a Spanish Sayaguesa bull while hiking on the Wapserveld with her husband on Sunday. She was left with a big gash on her face, and a big bruise on her side, her husband Karel Bakx said to RTV Drenthe.

"The animal was on the path, so we always go around it", Bakx said. Normally nothing happens, but this time the bull attacked his wife. "We were still lucky", Bakx said to the broadcaster after describing his wife's injuries.

A 66-year-old woman from Doesburg was rushed and injured by a Scottish Highlander cow while walking in the Posbank nature reserve a few weeks ago. The cow left her with a deep cut in the stomach, that is still undergoing treatment. Natuurmonumenten will reimburse the woman for all damages she suffered, forester Jeroen de Koe said, according to NOS. "It is our animals and it is our responsiblity."

An unusual natural phenomenon is happening on the island of Texel - lake Wagejot has been pink for several days. Nature conservation service Natuurmonumenten believes the color is the result of drought on the island - the water's high salt content is reacting to micro algae, the Telegraaf reports.

"We've never seen this before. From one day to another, the brackish water changed from gray-green to flamingo-pink", forest guard Eckard Boot of Natuurmonumenten said to the newspaper.

Forester Wim Hoogstraaten from Oisterwijk almost couldn't believe his eyes when he spotted a bright pink grasshopper at the visitors' center of Natuurmonumenten in Oisterwijk on Tuesday. Luckily  he got over his shock quickly enough to snap a picture.

Forester Frans Kapteijns describes the pink grasshopper as a "very special species", and very rare in the province of Noord-Brabant. "You mostly see them in limestone areas", he said to Omroep Brabant.

Bird watchers in Rotterdam and Den Bosch reported multiple sightings of the extremely rare bearded vulture, Waarneming.nl announced on Monday. With a wingspan of up to 2.8 meters, the bearded vulture is the largest bird of prey in Europe, ANP reports.

The bearded vulture does not naturally occur in the Netherlands. Nature reservation agency Natuurmonumenten expects that the bird will soon leave our country. Bearded vultures mainly feed on carcasses of large animals, something that's hard to find in the Netherlands.

In Limburg, eight wild boars were discovered swimming in the Zuid-Willemsvaart canal in Weert on Sunday. After a rescue operation from the fire department, the boars were shot dead by a hunter. Animal rights organizations and angry citizens are confused and angry at the situation, which seems to them not to make sense on several points.

The organization Wolves in The Netherlands is hanging a few dozen camera traps along the border to try and capture images of wolves who may be crossing over the border. The motion-sensitive cameras are being positioned in strategic areas to pin down where wolves could be roaming the country.

An otter, a rare sighting in the Randstad, has been reported recently in Nieuwkoopse Plassen. Its triumphant return was short-lived, however, as a dead otter was found on Wednesday on the A12 near Gouda.
