Forty percent of parents think that childcare is too expensive, according to a survey by social and cultural planning office SCP. What Dutch parents want is good, but above all affordable childcare, the researchers conclude, ANP reports.

The SCP researchers surveyed 1,800 parents of babies and toddlers. They found that many parents do not send their child to childcare because they find it too expensive. According to the SCP, those parents may not know exactly how expensive childcare really is and therefore have a distorted mage of the costs.

An 8-year-old boy who was found emaciated and neglected on a campground in Winterswijk in July, was beaten, tied up and locked in a chest, the Public Prosecutor revealed in a pro-forma hearing against the boy's parents on Tuesday. The boy's father partly confessed to the abuse, AD reports. 

The court in Zutphen decided that both parents will stay in custody for the time being, and that they will go to the Pieter Baan Center for psychiatric evaluations. The couple is accused of abuse and unlawful deprivation of liberty.

A third of Dutch kids are annoyed by their parents' smartphone usage, especially in the car and at the dinner table. As many as 38 percent say that their parents don't always respond when they ask them to put the smartphone down, according to a study by Nationale Academie among 1,849 kids between the ages of 13 and 18 years, RTL Nieuws reports.

Almost a quarter of parents use their phones at the dinner table on a regular basis, according to the kids. The young people feel that they should be more important than their parents' "virtual contacts", they said in the survey.

Dutch 15-year-olds are happy with their lives and perform well in school and sports, according to a three yearly study by te Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) which Education State Secretary Sander Dekker sent to parliament on Wednesday. Dutch teens give their lives an average score of 7.8, putting the Netherlands in second place for life satisfaction in a list of 35 countries from around the world. Finland came in first, Switzerland came in third.

It seems that kids really are "wandering bacteria bombs" that bring bacteria back from daycare to make their parents sick, according to research by Statistics Netherlands. Parents of young kids get sick more often than parents with older kids or adults with no kids,

Kids in the Netherlands are more in need of real interest and attention from adults than they are of more toys, Children's Ombudsman Margrite Kalverboer concluded after touring through the country speaking with children. "We believe that children are materialistic, but when you ask them what they think is important, it is attention at number 1", she said, according to Het Parool.

Kalverboer started her term as Children's Ombudsman of the Netherlands by touring through the country speaking with hundreds of children and having over 2 thousand kids fill out questionnaires.

Young parents in the Netherlands are flocking to first aid courses. They want to be able to save their child's life in case of an emergency, De Stentor reports.

Between 2013 and 2016 the number of people taking first aid courses in the country increased from 9 thousand to about 65 thousand. Belinda van der Graag of Red Cross Netherlands attributes the growth mainly to increased publicity the Red Cross gave to first aid in recent years.
