The A12 in Den Haag, also called the Utrechtsebaan, is closed in both directions on Thursday morning due to a burst water pipe. The extremely cold weather turned the road into something of an ice rink, the Telegraaf reports.

Morning rush hour was particularly chaotic in Limburg on Monday, with snow causing numerous traffic problems. A 2 centimeter layer of snow caused traffic jams on the highways and inland roads in the province south of Sittard, according to traffic services ANWB and VID, NU.nl reports.

Over 150 damage claims were made along the Dutch rail lines , of which there were about 40 serious incidents. Although limited train service in the Netherlands was expected to begin on Thursday at 5 p.m., the railroad infrastructure firm ProRail advised passengers to find alternative ways home.

Meteorological institute extended its code orange storm warning to the entire country. Traffic information services are reporting increasing problems on the roads due to accidents and bridges closing due to the strong winds.

The dike between Enkhuizen and Lelystad is currently closed to freight traffic and cars pulling trailers due to the weather. The Oosterscheldekering will be closed to all traffic between 9:00 a.m. and 11:00 a.m.

A western storm is set to hit the Netherlands this morning. A code orange weather warning for very strong winds is in effect for all provinces except the northern ones, where a code yellow warning is in place. Road users in Groningen are also warned to beware of icy roads. All forms of traffic will be affected by the storm, with canceled flights, fewer trains, and more traffic.

A western storm will hit the Netherlands on Thursday, bringing with it strong winds. Gusts of up to 130 kilometers per hour are expected in the western coastal provinces. Meteorological institute KNMI issued a code orange weather warning for the whole country, starting at 10:00 a.m. and continuing through to 2:00 p.m. A code yellow warning is in effect for the rest of the day.

After years of significant increases, the levels of traffic jams in the Netherlands remained almost stable this year. The level of traffic jams is calculated by multiplying the length of the traffic jam with its time duration, according to NOS. Last year this increased by 12 percent compared to 2015. This year it increased by only 0.6 percent, the broadcaster reports.

Despite today being a holiday, traffic information service VID warns motorists to expect "heavy traffic jams" this afternoon, RTL Nieuws reports. 

The roads will start getting busy from early afternoon, especially on the routes from the east to the Randstad - the A1, A12 and A28, according to VID. The traffic service expects that traffic will peak at around 100 kilometers of traffic jams on Dutch highways.

Motorists should be aware of reduced visibility due to fog during rush hour on Wednesday morning, meteorological institute KNMI warns. A code yellow weather warning is currently in effect for Gelderland and Utrecht, but the KNMI believes that other areas may also be affected.

"Dangerous driving conditions due to poor visibility. Adjust speed and keep sufficient following distance", the meteorological institute warns. "Follow weather reports and warnings."

The Netherlands' coastal provinces will face the season's first official autumn storm on Wednesday, according to meteorological institute KNMI. The KNMI warns of wind gusts on the coast and the IJsselmeer of up to 90 kilometers per hour. Weerplaza forecasts winds of up to 120 kilometers per hour on the Wadden.

Heavy rainfall across the Netherlands caused problems in many places on Wednesday morning. On Tuesday Weerplaza expected up to 50 millimeters of rain to fall in some places on Wednesday. Around 10:00 a.m. the most rain had fallen in Zuid-Holland and Zeeland, about 34 millimeters, according to the weather service.

Primary schools teachers across the Netherlands are striking this morning. Almost all primary schools in the country will open at 9:30 a.m., instead of 8:30 a.m. One positive side effect to this strike, is that traffic information service VID expects less traffic on the road during rush hour this morning.

A total of four people were killed in a number of serious traffic accidents in the Netherlands on Monday morning. Three people were killed along the A6 towards Muiden when their car ended up in the water. And a cyclist was killed in Breda when she was hit by a truck. A toddler in a trailer on the bicycle survived unharmed.

Motorists are increasingly affected by traffic accidents, according to figures by traffic information service VID. The number of traffic jams caused by accidents increased by a quarter over the past decade, BNR reports.

The total delay caused by accidents increased by a quarter over the past five years and nearly doubled compared to 10 years ago. The duration of traffic jams caused by accidents also increased.  Of every hour spent in a traffic jams, 18 minutes were caused by an accident. In 2006 it was 10 minutes.

An accident involving a motorcycle and at least three cars closed the A1 highway towards Amsterdam between Naarden-West and Diemen on Thursday morning. Traffic information service VID calls it a "serious accident" and expects it to cause many traffic problems.

By around 6:30 a.m. the traffic jam behind the accident was already 7 kilometers long, according to VID on Twitter. Motorists are advised to detour via Utrecht over the A27, A12 and A2. It is unclear how long the road will be closed.

The portion of the southbound A4 expressway that travels through the Schiphol Tunnel will remain closed at least through the evening rush hour period, and possibly into Wednesday, Dutch public works department Rijkswaterstaat announced Tuesday afternoon. The decision was made when engineers were unable to restart exhaust fans in the tunnel during safety testing.

Around midnight meteorological institute KNMI withdrew a for strong winds triggered by a February storm that hit the Netherlands on Thursday. The winds died down somewhat overnight. And while emergency services were busy due to the bad weather, so far the damage caused by the storm seem less severe than expected, NOS reports.

Meteorological institute KNMI issued a code yellow weather warning for slick, icy roads for the entire Netherlands on Thursday morning. "Adjust your driving behavior", the institute warns. "Follow weather reports and warnings."

Traffic information services ANWB and VID also warned of icy roads. Both reported several traffic accidents already, though it is unclear whether any of these are related to the slickness on the roads.

Thick fog in the coastal provinces and icy roads in the entire Netherlands triggered meteorological institute KNMI to issue a code yellow weather warning on Monday morning. The weather conditions can hinder all forms of traffic, the KNMI warns.

Visibility may be reduced to less than 200 meters in some places. And slickness may particularly a problem on bridges and viaducts, the institute warns. Motorists are advised to adjust their driving behavior - slow down and keep a safe following distance. Also keep an eye on traffic and weater reports.

Meteorological institute KNMI issued a code yellow weather warning of icy, slick roads caused by the snowfall overnight. All provinces except the coastal ones are affected.

Motorists are warned that to adjust their driving behavior - slow down and keep a safe following distance. Keep a close eye on weather and traffic reports. The slickness should dissipate during the course of the morning. The southeast and eastern parts of the country will experience it the longest.
