The police in the Netherlands registered 18 thousand underage suspects last year, an increase of 6.5 percent compared to the year before. 2019 was the first year since 2009 in which more underage suspects were caught than the year before. In the past decade, the number of minor offenders more than halved, Statistics Netherlands reported on Friday.

The number of sex crimes the police registered last year decreased by 13 percent compared to 2018, according to an analysis of crime statistics released on Wednesday. The main categories of violent crime combined to show only a slight overall increase in 2019 when compared to the year before, even as there were large increases in categories like forced labor, muggings, and threats of violence.

A group of pickpockets or muggers set off multiple cans of pepper spray at the Martin Garrix performance in the Amsterdam Dance Event during the early hours of Saturday morning. They used the burning eyes and trouble breathing as a distraction to rob party goers of their possessions, the Amsterdam police said in a statement. The police call on victims to come forward.

Three women were attacked in the vicinity of Wageningen University over the past week and a half, the police said in a statement on Sunday. The police are investigating whether the cases are connected.

The latest attack happened between 11:30 p.m. and midnight on Saturday. A 22-year-old student was cycling between Marijkeweg and Haarweg when she was attacked by three men who wanted to steal her bag. The men jumped from behind some bushes and threatened her with a weapon. She managed to get away with her bag and a number of minor injuries, the police said.

A total of 14 people were arrested during Canal Pride activities in Amsterdam on Friday night and Saturday, for crimes ranging from pickpocketing to sailing under the influence. "The police look back on a pleasant Canal Pride", the police said in a statement.

Eleven people were arrested at Pride festivities on Saturday, including seven for sailing under the influence. Three people were arrested at Pride parties on Friday, for pickpocketing, insult, and assault.

A total of 1,289 muggings were registered in Amsterdam last year. In nearly 80 of these street robberies, the victim was robbed of their watch or jewelry. More than 300 phones were stolen, Het Parool reports based on answers given to questions from VVD and PvdA city councilors. 

The muggings often happen on or around routes to entertainment areas, parks and train station. Over a quarter of last year's muggings happened in Amsterdam city center. The area around the Red Light District and Dam Square was most often targeted by muggers.

Police cameras are being installed at the campus on the NDSM site in Amsterdam Noord after an "unacceptable" number of incidents, mayor Femke Halsema said in a letter to the city council. Incidents involved rape, burglary and muggings, and attempts thereto, she said, NU.nl reports.

The cameras come on top of previous measures taken, such as extra police patrols, better lighting, and "resilience training" for local residents. "Despite these measures, the number of incidents is unacceptably high", the mayor said.

Amsterdam is still the city in the Netherlands with the highest crime figures, according to newspaper AD's annual crime monitor Misdaadmeter. Neighboring municipality Diemen is catching up to the Dutch capital, moving from the 26th most unsafe municipality in 2017 to the 8th last year. Limburg counts four municipalities in the top 10 least safe, AD reports.

The Utrecht police arrested three teenagers on suspicion of mugging school children in Vleuten and Leidsche Rijn. Cycling pupils were mugged multiple times on their way home from school in January. The muggers stole money and belongings, the Telegraaf reports.

Investigation led the police to three boys aged 13, 14 and 16 from Utrecht. They are linked to one of four muggings. Their involvement in the other three crimes is still under investigation.

A 25-year-old woman was stabbed multiple times in a mugging in Amsterdam during the early hours of Friday morning. She was rushed to hospital in critical condition, AT5 reports.

The victim was walking on the grass on Tongerenstraat when an unknown man tried to grab her bag. When this did not succeed right away, he stabbed her several times. The mugger fled with her bag.

The police are investigating.

Nationwide crime is steadily declining,  according to figures the National Police will publish on Thursday, the Volkskrant reports.

The Amsterdam mayor, police and Public Prosecutor are concerned about a seeming shift towards more invisible forms of crime in the Dutch the capital, they said in a report on Monday. With "invisible" crimes they refer to actions that are criminal in nature, but are socially embedded in neighborhoods and often out of the control and sight of the government, ANP reports.

A large proportion of this invisible crime has to do with conflicts in the drug world, according to the Amsterdam triangle. These crimes lead to arms trade, money laundering and assassinations.

Rotterdam police chief Frank Paauw is very concerned about the increasing number of incidents involving mentally disturbed people. This year the Rotterdam police dealt with 8,200 such incidents, compared to 7 thousand in 2016. "Disturbed people kill more people than terrorism", Paauw said during a press conference about the Rotterdam Police's year, NU.nl reports.

The police arrested a total of 148 suspects in a so-called 'civilian action' in Amsterdam's Red Light District over the weekend. Arrests were made for public drug use, possession of hard drugs, drug dealing, mugging and pickpocketing, AT5 reports.

A massive 72 of the arrests were drug related. 15 people were arrested for begging, and 18 for disrupting public order. Two muggers and two pickpockets were arrested. And another man was taken to the police station for carrying pepper spray.

A Rabobank employee suspected of working with robbers, tipped the robbers about a customer who withdrew 100 thousand euros from a branch in Venlo. The man from Mulheim in Germany was robbed on the street a short time later, the Limburger reports.

The suspected bank employee worked at Rabobank's customer service department three days a week. He told the police that the robbers were blackmailing him with incriminating information. He cooperated with them because he feared for his job.

Over the past two months the Rotterdam police arrested 16 teenagers between the ages of 14- and 19-years-old for involvement in a series of crime in the city, the police said in a statement.

The gang of teenagers are suspected of at least 14 burglaries in Tarwewijk and Charlois. They are also believed to be involved in at least one mugging and scooter theft. All of the suspects come from Rotterdam.

The man who was stabbed to death at a known meeting place for gay men in Amsterdam's Oosterpark on Friday was 33-year-old Jan Majdanski from Poland, the police announced on Opsporing Verzocht on Tuesday. Majdanski was openly gay and lived in Rotterdam.

The police also revealed that they are considering other scenarios in addition to a mugging gone wrong. It is possible that Majdanski was killed because of his sexual orientation or trouble in a relationship.

An East European man was robbed and stabbed in Amsterdam's Oosterpark on Friday night. He died of his injuries in hospital later that night. The police are looking for four suspects seen near the Tropenmuseum that night and are calling on witnesses to come forward, the Volkskrant reports.

One person sustained minor injuries when a suspected mugger stabbed hi in the arm on the Westland Canal in Amsterdam-Zuid on Wednesday. According to the police, the victim was not seriously injured, AD reports.

It looks like the perpetrator used a screwdriver to stab his victim. He was arrested immediately after the incident.

The police believe this was a mugging that went to far. The perpetrator tried to grab the victim's phone.
