Employers' organization AWVN wants to make it mandatory for freelancers, entrepreneurs and other self-employed to have occupational disability cover. The AWVN will present this plan at a conference on Monday, Trouw reports.

Compulsory disability insurance for self-employed and freelancers has long been a point of dispute between employers and trade unions. Trade unions warn of the risk that the growing group of self-employed in the Netherlands form, while employers argued that self-employed should be able to decide for themselves how they spend their income.

Less than 20 percent of the 873 thousand freelancers and self-employed in the Netherlands have insurance against occupational disability, according to figures by Statistics Netherlands and TNO. 70 percent of this group don't have insurance because they can't afford it. 

A quarter of this group say they can carry this risk by themselves and just over 20 percent can fall back on their partner's income. 14 percent don't have insurance because they don't trust insurers. This is especially common in the construction industry, according to the stats office.

Dutch insurer Nationale-Nederlanden (NN) teamed up with Vodafone to launch a new service called Bundelz - a prepaid car insurance. Bundelz provides car insurance for 1,000 kilometers at a time. After that distance, a new bundle is automatically purchased, AD reports.

Bundelz is intended for motorists who don't drive much - on average less than 100 kilometers per week and less than 7,500 kilometers per year. A bundle covering only liability insurance wil cost around 50 euros, and an all-risk bundle 70 euros. They remain valid for a year.

The Dutch government made approximately 450 million euros by selling 20.4 million shares in former Fortis insurer ASR. The shares were sold for 22.15 euros each, NLFI announced on Friday, ANP reports.

The NLFI is the foundation that manages the Dutch government's shares in financial institutions.

With the sale of 20.4 million shares on Thursday, the government's share of ASR reduced from 63.7 percent to 50.1 percent. the government plans to further reduce its share in ASR, but has to wait at least 90 days before another transaction can happen.

Achmea is cutting about 2 thousand jobs in the Netherlands between now and 2019, the insurer announced on Thursday, ANP reports.

According to the insurer, these job cuts are necessary due to the further digitization and the changing needs of the customer. "A further decrease in our costs and number of jobs is inevitable", the insurer said. Achmea hopes to cut costs by at least 200 million euros in the next few years.

Profits of the insurer Achmea decreased drastically over the previous year, reaching the level of 16 million euros, reports De Telegraaf. The contraction is dramatic compared to 2013 when Achmea accumulated over 120 million euros in profits over the first two quarters en route to a 344 million euro profit for the year.
