The number of people suspected of violence against people with a public duty, like police officers, firefighters and paramedics, increased by nearly 20 percent last year. In 2017 a total of 8,964 people were suspected of verbally or physically attacking an emergency worker, compared to 7,502 the year before, NOS reports.
First responders at Schiphol Airport will soon be equipped with tourniquets that they will carry at all times. This precautionary measure is intended to prevent deaths through blood loss after an incident like an attack, a Schiphol spokesperson confirmed to ANP.
Tourniquets will form part of the standard uniform and equipment, in addition to defibrillators.
The municipality of Amsterdam, along with emergency services in the city and the Ministry of Defense, will be holding large anti-terrorism training drills in the city on November 8th and 9th. A 79-year-old man shot his neighbor in the Rotterdam neighborhood of Charlois on Tuesday morning before turning the gun on himself. The 21-year-old woman is in critical condition. The elderly man died in hospital this afternoon, AD reports.
According to local residents, the two neighbors, who shared a porch, were in the midst of a quarrel. They were seen exchanging words around 8:30 a.m., witnesses told the newspaper. The man shot the young woman right in front of their homes and barricaded himself in his house.

Four prison guards and one prisoner were taken to hospital on Wednesday morning to be treated for smoke inhalation in a fire in De Schie prison on Professor Jonkersweg in Rotterdam. Two of the injured inhaled a large amount of smoke, but no one is in life-threatening danger, a spokesperson for the fire department said to newspaper AD.
A 56-year-old ship's captain from Leeuwarden was killed on the Maasvlakteweg in the Rotterdam harbor, Sunday afternoon, when a piece of steel fell on the cabin of his barge. His 60-year-old wife and a 45-year-old terminal worker from Ridderkerk were injured.
