A 14-year-old boy was convicted and sentenced to one year in a youth detention facility for his role in the death of Romy Nieuwburg, a girl his age from Hoevelaken. The teen boy was also ordered to spend mandatory time in a psychiatric facility, which can be extended to a maximum of seven years.

The sentence is the harshest available for the conviction of a suspect under 16 years of age. It is equivalent to what the prosecutor in the case sought against the Lunteren boy.

The 14-year-old boy suspected of sexually assaulting and killing 14-year-old Romy Nieuwburg on Friday last week, made a statement to the judiciary in which he confessed to both charges, the Public Prosecutor said on Twitter. He was remanded into custody for two weeks, the magistrate ruled on Thursday. According to the magistrate, there is currently sufficient suspicion to keep him in custody.

A 14-year-old boy arrested in connection with the death of Romy Nieuwburg from Hoevelaken, is suspected of sexually assaulting and killing the 14-year-old girl on Friday. The boy from Lunteren will be arraigned on Thursday, the Public Prosecutor announced on Wednesday, AD reports.

The J.H. Donner School in De Glind is adjusting its entire week program to help students adjust to the death of classmate Romy Nieuwburg. "The children were talked to in their classes this morning. There was a lot of sorrow, helplessness, but also togetherness and connection." school director Jan Hofman said to the press on Tuesday morning. He asked that the students' privacy be respected so they can mourn in peace, the Telegraaf reports.

Romy Nieuwburg knew the boy the police suspect of involvement in her death. The two 14-year-olds met each other through friends about two years ago, AD reports. The boy, who was arrested on Monday, lives on a farm in Lunteren, according to the newspaper.

The police arrested two teenage boys during the early hours of Monday morning in connection with the deaths of 14-year-old girls Savannah Dekker and Romy Nieuwburg, the police said in a statement. At this stage te police believe the girls' deaths are unrelated and investigators are treating them as separate cases.

They describe her as "the perfect daughter and friend". Her school, J.H. Donner school in nearby De Glind, is also "devastated" by her loss, according to director Jan Hofman.

The missing teen's body was found some 15 kilometers away from where another 14-year-old girl, Romy Nieuwburg, was found killed in a watery ditch in Achterveld, Utrecht on Friday.

A body found dead in a watery ditch in Achterveld, Utrecht was identified as that of a 14-year-old girl from neighboring Hoevelaken, police said on Saturday. An initial investigation determined that a crime led to the girl's death, police said without elaborating further.

A witness noticed the body at about 5 p.m. on Friday while on the Emelaarsepad. Police are asking anyone who was in the area in the hours leading up to the discovery to contact them as they try to piece together what happened that day.
