Suspect confesses to murder of Romy Nieuwburg
The 14-year-old boy suspected of sexually assaulting and killing 14-year-old Romy Nieuwburg on Friday last week, made a statement to the judiciary in which he confessed to both charges, the Public Prosecutor said on Twitter. He was remanded into custody for two weeks, the magistrate ruled on Thursday. According to the magistrate, there is currently sufficient suspicion to keep him in custody.
Romy's body was found in a watery ditch in Achterveld, Utrecht on Friday. She was killed on her way home to Hoevelaken from school in De Glind. On Wednesday the Public Prosecutor revealed that she was also sexually assaulted.
The suspect and Romy knew each other from school - the J.H. Donner School in De Glind. It is a school for kids with behavioral problems and who need extra emotional support. About 650 people live in De Glind, many of them kids living with foster parents or in group homes.
The 14-year-old suspect comes fom Lunteren, in the municipality of Ede.
Verdachte heeft over beide feiten een bekennende verklaring afgelegd. Beperkingen zijn opgeheven. Onderzoek wordt voortgezet. https://t.co/XgRdOCexX6
