Boy sexually assaulted, killed 14-year-old Romy: Prosecutor

A 14-year-old boy arrested in connection with the death of Romy Nieuwburg from Hoevelaken, is suspected of sexually assaulting and killing the 14-year-old girl on Friday. The boy from Lunteren will be arraigned on Thursday, the Public Prosecutor announced on Wednesday, AD reports.

Romy was found dead in a watery ditch in Achterveld, Utrecht on Friday afternoon. She was attacked while cycling home from school in De Glind. Romy and the suspect knew each other through school. Romy attended J.H. Donner School, a school for children with behavioral problems and who need extra emotional support. According to NU.nl, many of the school's students live in foster- or group homes in De Glind.

The magistrate will decide whether the Lunteren boy will remain in custody. The police are still investigating the circumstances around Romy's death. Due to the age of both victim and suspect, the Prosecutor will say nothing further about the case.

The 16-year-old boy suspected of involvement in the death of 14-year-old Savannah Dekker from Bunschoten, will also be arraigned on Thursday.
