New figures released on Wednesday by public health agency RIVM showed that another 852 people were diagnosed with coronavirus, and 80 more people who tested positive for the virus have died. The Netherlands is now home to 6,412 people in total who have tested positive for the virus, a 15.3 percent increase compared to figures released on Tuesday.

Wednesday's increase in of 852 patients was the highest recorded single-day increase in the Netherlands to date. Nevertheless, the rate of increase fell from the 17.1 percent growth in patients recorded a day earlier.

The police in Westervoort and Duiven, Gelderland, have fined five people for not adhering to rules in place to curb the spread of coronavirus Covid-19. The culprits involved formed groups of three or more people and did not stay the required 1.5 meters away from each other.

NS is presenting special public transport tickets for teenagers between the ages of 12 and 18, which are cheaper than normal train tickets. The Dutch rail company hopes that this will encourage more young people to take the train. The new teen tickets will be available from the summer, NOS reports.

A 15-year-old boy was found dead at the company where he worked in the Gelderland town of Dodewaard on Wednesday. Emergency services were deployed to the business on the Edisonring, but attempts to resuscitate the boy was to no avail. He died at the scene, the police said on Twitter.

The boy's body was discovered by colleagues just before 4:00 p.m., according to newspaper AD.

Minister Ferdinand Grapperhaus of Justice and Security is stepping up the fight against children and teenagers carrying knives and other stabbing weapons, he said in an interview with the Telegraaf. On Monday the mayors of Nissewaard and Ridderkerk called for a nationwide ban on minors carrying these weapons. And mayor Ahmed Aboutaleb of Rotterdam announced that he will fine the parents of children caught twice with knives.

Schools in Arnhem sounded the alarm about an increasing number of school children smoking cannabis during school time. "In some classes, 50 to 60 percent of the students [smoke joints]", Eelco van der Kruk of the Thomas  Kempis College in Arnhem said to the city council this week, speaking on behalf of multiple schools, Omroep Gelderland reports.

A train passenger and her child were struck by a collapsed window after people threw rocks at their train car on Thursday. Police said two boys were arrested walking along the train tracks in Heerhugowaard soon after the Thursday afternoon incident.

The train was pelted with rocks at about 12:30 p.m. near Hectorlaan in the Noord-Holland town as the train was approaching the station. Police said they are looking to interview the mother and child, but they have not made contact with authorities.

Problems with health care relatively often played a role in the suicide of young people between the ages of 10 and 20 years in 2017, according to a study performed on behalf of the Ministry of Public Health. Young people who took their own lives in that year also often struggled with bullying or having high expectations of themselves, the researchers found.

The Public Prosecution Service in Amsterdam is concerned about young people seemingly being increasingly eager to shoot or stab each other. "My concern is great, because you see that the number of incidents involving young people who shoot or stab is increasing," chief prosecutor John Lucas said in an interview with AT5. Amsterdam police chief Frank Paauw expressed similar concerns earlier this year.

Two more teenaged boys were arrested in connection with the fatal stabbing of a 64-year-old man who was withdrawing cash from an ATM. A 16-year-old boy from Hoofddorp held by police earlier this week was released from custody.

The police arrested a 16-year-old boy from Hoofddorp for involvement in a stabbing in which a 64-year-old man died on Monday. The man was attacked while he and his wife were withdrawing cash from an ATM at the Toolenburg shopping center in Hoofddorp.

The stabbing happened shortly after 9:00 p.m. Attempts to resuscitate the victim were to no avail. He died at the scene.

School kids in the Netherlands share quite shocking images on their WhatsApp groups, RTL Nieuws found by gaining access to dozens of these groups. The researchers found child pornography, revenge porn, videos of ISIS decapitations, racist- and anti-Semitic images, and Nazi propaganda commonly shared on these groups. 

The broadcaster gained access to dozens of these groups, containing children between the ages of 12 and 16. The groups often have hundreds of members, sharing thousands of messages every day.

Over the past months the police arrested a 14 teenagers and a 19-year-old man from Leiden and its surroundings in an investigation into sexual extortion. So far 28 victims reported to the police that teenagers were extorting them, threatening to post sexual photos of them online if they don't pay them money, the police said in a statement.

The victims range in age between 14 and 48 years. The police believe there are many more victims, and that this group of teenagers extorted around 100 thousand euros from the victims.

A 15-year-old boy was seriously injured while lighting illegal fireworks in Dongen, Noord-Brabant on Wednesday. "They boy will lose some fingers and possibly even a hand due to the accident", the Tilburg police said on Twitter.

Emergency services responded to the scene at around 4:00 p.m. The boy was lighting fireworks with two friends. As far as is known, the two friends were not hurt. What type of fireworks they were playing with, is not yet clear.

A man arrested at Eindhoven train station on Thursday night is a 24-year-old resident of Dordrecht. He is suspected of involvement in a shooting in his hometown, in which a 17-year-old boy was seriously injured on October 18th, Eindhovens Dagblad reports.

Three 17-year-old boys were arrested on suspicion of assaulting and robbing a 47-year-old man in Bilthoven on August 19th. The victim went to the scene because of a date he made through dating app Grindr. 

The man, from Soest, met his date at a parking lot in Bilthoven as agreed through the app. The two walked into the forest on Dwarspad, where five other young men were waiting for them. .

Police officers found a 17-year-old girl who had been missing for several days at a hotel in Middelburg on Wednesday evening. The police fear she was being forced to work as a prostitute. Two persons were arrested on suspicion of human trafficking, the police said on Thursday.

Information that the teenage girl may be working for an escort company led the police to the Middelburg hotel on Wednesday. The suspects, a 22-year-old man from Zierikzee and an 18-year-old woman from Rotterdam, were arrested when they arrived at the hotel with the girl at around 10:00 p.m. on Wednesday.

The partner of Amsterdam mayor Femke Halsema was formally questioned in connection with the ownership of a deactivated German revolver, according to newspapers Telegraaf and AD. Robert Oey was considered a crime suspect for the purpose of the interview, a spokesperson told the Telegraaf.

A spokesperson for the public prosecution service in Haarlem said the official interview was planned after Oey said the gun which led to the arrest of his and Halsema’s son was actually his.

The weapon that Amsterdam mayor Femke Halsema's 15-year-old son was arrested with in July was a deactivated revolver that belonged to his father, Robert Oey, the boy's father and Halsema's partner said in an interview with NRC. The boy found the weapon in a drawer in the mayor's official residence, where Oey left it before going on a business trip to Hong Kong, he said, adding that Halsema did not know the weapon was there. Opposition parties in Amsterdam want an explanation from the mayor.

Two boys and a girl were injured in a stabbing incident in Breda on Sunday night. One of the boys was injured to such an extent that he was rushed to a hospital in Rotterdam. The other two victims were taken to a hospital in Breda. The suspect fled the scene, but thanks to many tips, a 30-year-old man from Breda was later arrested, the police said in a statement on Monday morning.

An increasing number of young people in Amsterdam carry a knife with them, make threatening videos with it, and actually use it on the street, and that is very concerning, Amsterdam police chief Frank Paauw said to AT5.

"You can see it is getting out of hand", Paauw said to the Amsterdam broadcaster "Sometimes you see young people under 15 who are already walking around with a knife. The possession of weapons the carrying of knives, is becoming commonplace."

"As a human being, you really cannot bear so much sadness, anger, emotion and disbelief", the parents of 15-year-old Megan, who was stabbed to death in her mother's Breda home last week, said in a letter published by Omroep Brabant. In the letter they thank everyone for the support and sympathy they received, and said they hope the perpetrator will get the maximum punishment.
