Man found dead acquitted of stalking woman killed in Mijdrecht shooting

A man who was found dead in the Utrecht village of Wilnis on Wednesday, was acquitted in February of stalking a woman who was shot and killed in Mijdrecht on Tuesday night. The woman pressed charges against the 54-year-old man in September last year, accusing him of insulting and stalking her between May and September 2018, NOS reports.

A restraining order was issued against the man from Zegveld in November last year, and he was summoned to appear in court in February. During the trial, the Public Prosecutor demanded community service and an extension of the restraining order against him. The court did not consider it proven that the man was stalking the woman and acquitted him, which meant that the restraining order also lapsed.

On Tuesday night the woman was shot and killed in a home on Landsherenstraat in Mijdrecht. On Wednesday morning, the man's body was found along the roadside on Amstelkade in Wilnis. According to the police, he took his own life.

As the man was acquitted in February, the Public Prosecutor would not tell NOS what type of stalking the man was accused of. The Prosecutor also refused to say whether there is a connection between the woman's murder and the man's suicide, as the investigation is still ongoing.
