Mijdrecht shooting victim's stalker found dead in nearby village

A 54-year-old man from Zegveld was found dead along the roadside in the Utrecht village of Wilnis on Wednesday morning. He was identified as the stalker of a woman who was shot and killed in a home in the nearby Mijdrecht on Tuesday night, NOS reports.

The man's body was found on Amstelkade. According to the police, the man took his own life. The police are investigating whether the man was involved in the woman's death, and whether his suicide had anything to do with it.

Witnesses saw an injured man leave the Mijdrecht home where the woman was killed. Local residents told RTV Utrecht that the woman had a relationship with the man who stalked her.

The mayor of the municipality of De Ronde Venen, which covers Mijdrecht, launched an investigation into the victim's background. "I think it falls under my responsibility to investigate to what extent authorities, aid and government have been involved at the relevant address and with the people involved", Mayor Maarten Divendal said, according to NOS.
