Jumbo supermarkets will stop selling live lobsters, after years of protest by animal rights activists. A large Jumbo branch in Utrecht will get no tank for live lobsters, and branches in Amsterdam, Breda and Veghel will stop selling them, RTL Nieuws reports.

Albert Heijn won animal rights organization Wakker Dier's "liar, liar award" for 2017 with an misleading article about the supermarket chain's serrano ham. An article about the ham in an April issue of Allerhande showed a picture of pigs in a meadow, while the Albert Heijn serrano ham pigs spend their entire lives in a small stable surrounded by their own poop, according to the organization, RTL Nieuws reports.

Supermarket chains Albert Heijn and Jumbo promised that all their home brand chicken meat and fresh chicken meals will be factory-farm chicken free by the end of this year, animal welfare group Wakker Dier announced. They are the first supermarket chains to take this step.

Wakker Dier announced on Sunday that from August on, no plofkip will be used anymore in baby food of the drugstore chain Kruidvat.

Kruidvat writes in a letter to Wakker Dier that ‘the use of plofkip is not in accordance with the aim, to choose as much as possible for responsible ingredients’. A plofkip is a chicken which is brought in a short time to a desired weight, with all kind of negative effects for the chicken itself.
