So far this year the Netherlands had 51 summer days - days on which temperatures climbed to 25 degrees or higher in De Bilt, according to Weeronline. 2006 also had 51 summer days, but spread over the entire year.

Sunday was the 51st summer day of 2018. Only one more hot day is needed to break the 2006 record. This may happen on Wednesday or Thursday, when maximums of around 25 degrees are expected. Temperatures also often climb to above 25 degrees in late August and September, according to Weeronline. In 2006 the 51st summer day only happened on September 22nd.

The over the past weeks did not cause an increase in the number of deaths in the country, public health institute RIVM said. According to the institute, this is because many people who were already weakened passed away in the winter, and because the Dutch are getting better at protecting themselves against the heat, AD reports.

Vegetable giant Greenco is giving away some 6 million cherry tomatoes for free. Due to the hot weather, the tomatoes saw too much sun, causing their skin to become wrinkled. They can therefore no longer be sold because their quality is too low for supermarkets.

There is officially a nationwide water shortage in the Netherlands, but the drinking water is not in danger, according to the Ministry of Infrastructure and Water Management. As the drought is expected to continue in the coming weeks, more measures may be taken to distribute the available water as well as possible, NU.nl reports.

This July was the driest ever since rainfall measurements started in the Netherlands. Only 11 millimeters of rain fell nation wide this month, breaking the previous record of 16 millimeters in July 1921, Weeronline reported on Tuesday.

On Tuesday, the last day in July, there is a chance of some rain in the north and west of the country. At most another 1 millimeter of rain will fall. Weeronline therefore feels safe to say the record is broken.

The number of wildfires in the Netherlands increased significantly this year. So far in 2018 there were already more wildfire reports than there were in the entire 2016 and 2017, according to figures from alarmeringen.nl, RTL Nieuws reports.

In 2016 a total of 1,293 reports were made of forest, heath and other wildfires. In 2017 there were 1,530. The wildfire report counter for this year already stands at 1,728.

The Dutch police rescued children from sweltering cars in two separate incidents on Thursday. Both incidents were reported to Veilig Thuis, the hotline for domestic violence and child abuse, ANP reports.

Two children were taken from a hot car parked at a supermarket in Ter Aar, Zuid-Holland. The kids' father, a 38-year-old man from Kaag en Braassem, was arrested.

Last night was the hottest night ever in the Netherlands since temperatures measurements started in 1901. The minimum in De Bilt was 23.6 degrees Celsius, breaking the previous record from 9 August 2004 of 20.8 degrees, Weerplaza reports.

Maastricht had a higher minimum temperature in 2012, but official records are always measured at the weather station in De Bilt.

Deelen in Gelderland was the warmest last night, with a minimum of 24.4 degrees. Flevoland, the Wadden area and the western parts of Zeeland all also had minimums of above 23 degrees Celsius.

The province of Friesland, Wetterskip Fryslân and water company Vitens are appealing to Friesland residents to take water saving measures. Due to the heat and drought, the demand for drinking water is 30 percent higher than normal, RTL Nieuws reports.

The "unprecedentedly high" demand is resulting in decreased water pressure, especially during peak times and in high buildings. 

Friesland residents are called on not to use drinking water for watering their gardens or washing windows and cars. Also keep your shower as short as possible.

On Friday Arriva is running an adjusted timetable with fewer trains on its routes in Groningen and Friesland. The public transit company is struggling with equipment problems caused by the persistent heat, Arriva said on its website.

"In order to be able to offer the most reliable timetable possible, Arriva is therefore working on a modified timetable on Friday", the company said. Arriva train traffic was also affected by these equipment problems on Thursday, according to RTV Noord.

The Netherlands is officially in the midst of a national heatwave. Temperatures measured 30 degrees at De Bilt at 11:20 on Thursday, the third consecutive day of maximums above 30 degrees, making a national heatwave a fact. Heat records were broken at 15 weather stations across the country, NU.nl reports.

For a national heatwave, De Bilt must have five consecutive days with maximums of 25 degrees or higher. Three of those days must measure temperatures of 30 degrees or higher.

Tuesday is the start of a very hot couple of days in the Netherlands. Weeronline expects temperatures to climb up to 37 degrees Celsius by the end of the week.

On Tuesday the eastern parts of the Randstad can expect maximums around 32 degrees. Rotterdam and Amsterdam will hit 30 degrees. The central parts of the country will see maximums between 32 and 35 degrees - the hottest it's been all year. The Wadden area, parts of Noord-Holland and along the west coast will be slightly cooler, with maximums ranging between 27 and 29 degrees, according to the weather service.

There is a 60 percent chance of a national heatwave in the Netherlands next week, according to Weeronline. Widespread maximums of between 30 and 32 degrees Celsuis are expected from Tuesday onwards.

On Friday and over the weekend, maximums will range between 22 and 25 degrees along the coast and between 25 and 30 degrees in the rest of the country. "In fact, the heat wave already started in the vast majority of the country. It is only a matter of time until many weather stations meet the conditions", according to Weeronline.

Dutch firefighters had their hands full battling forest fires in the Noord-Brabant nature area Mariapeel and on Terschelling during the early hours of Friday morning. The fires in both areas are now under control, with occasional flare-ups. Firefighters and the Forestry Commission are monitoring the areas, keeping the edges around the fires wet so it can't spread, Omroep Brabant and NOS report.

At 11:20 a.m. thermometers in Arcen, Limburg read 32.2 degrees Celsius, thereby making today the hottest June 22nd ever measured in the Netherlands. This is the 9th heat record broken in the country so far this year and the third one this month, according to Weeronline.

February 15th, March 30th and 31st, May 27th and 29th and June 15th and 21st also broke heat records. 

Today is exceptionally hot in the Netherlands, especially in the southeast with maximums ranging between 33 and 35 degrees. Some places may even hit 36 degrees Celsius.

The fire department issued a code red warning for forest fires in Noord-Brabant and Zeeland due to the hot and dry weather conditions expected in the provinces on Wednesday and Thursday. Meteorological institute KNMI also issued a code yellow heat warning for most of the Netherlands.

Hot weather is in store for the Netherlands this weak, with a heat wave expected for the southern parts of the country, according to weather services Weerplaza and Weeronline. 

Many inland areas of the Netherlands will see temperatures around 30 degrees today. The extreme south may even see their thermometers climb to 33 degrees. Along the coast will be slightly cooler with temperatures around 27 degrees, according to meteorological institute KNMI. If temperatures climb to 30 degrees in De Bilt, today will be the second tropical day of this year. The first was on May 27th.

Rising temperatures across the Netherlands are expected to peak above thirty degrees on Saturday, making way for thunderstorms Saturday night and a brief cool off on Sunday. The rising heat has led many weather experts to warn people participating in the Vierdaagse march in Nijmegen, a four-day walk where participants journey between 30 and 50 kilometers daily.

Most of the employers take no additional measures during extreme heat at the workplace. This says FNV on Thursday based on the initial results of the Hotline Summer Heat (Zomerhitte).

The union opened two weeks ago a hotline where employees can complain about high temperatures at their workplace. Meanwhile, a questionnaire was completed by 612 people. Of those, 61 percent indicated that their employer has done nothing against the extreme heat
