Video: Freight train derails after crashing into truck at Rotterdam port's Europoort
A freight train derailed after crashing into a truck in Europoort in the port of Rotterdam. The accident happened on Sunday on Elbeweg, at a level crossing secured by flashing lights and crosses, but with no barriers. No one got hurt, Hart van Nederland reported.
According to ProRail, the collision caused “significant damage’ to both the train and truck. The rail manager could not say anything about damage to the rails and overhead lines on Sunday afternoon. The train first had to be placed back on the track and removed before that could be assessed.
One track was unavailable, leaving the freight terminal inaccessible by train.
The authorities are investigating how the accident happened. It is unclear what the train was carrying, but according to ProRail, no hazardous materials leaked.
According to Hart van Nederland, it is not uncommon for rail crossings to have no barriers in Rotterdam’s port area. Freight trains always travel very slowly there, and flashing lights are usually enough warning.
