Rail manager ProRail will start experimenting with self-driving trains on several routes next year. The first test involves freight trains on the Betuwe-line. And the first experiment with passenger trains will happen in the province of Groningen, NOS reports.

The freight trains tests will be done in cooperation with Alstom, a company that is developing a system for automatic train operation. The experiment in Groningen will be done in collaboration with transit company Arriva and the province of Groningen.

A freight train carrying liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) derailed in Nieuwdorp in Zeeland on Monday night. No one was injured and there was no leakage or risk of explosion, according to the Human Environment and Transport Inspectorate. The cleanup is expected to take until early Wednesday morning, AD reports.

Three men from Bergen op Zoom were arrested at the Lage Zwaluwe train station last week for trying to smuggle 24 kilograms of cocaine out of the country, the police said in a statement on Tuesday. They are also suspected of money laundering. The cocaine was found in suitcases hidden on a freight train headed for Milan, Italy.

A freight train collided with a truck in northern Limburg on Tuesday morning. The accident happened at a railway crossing near Colombusweg, between Blerick and Sevenum. No one was injured. No train traffic will be possible between Eindhoven and Venlo for the rest of the day, ProRail expects, ANP reports.

A freight train collided with an excavator at a guarded railway crossing in Deurne around 6:00 a.m. on Monday morning. No one was injured, according to the fire department. But no train traffic will be possible between Helmond and Horst-Sevenum for at least the rest of the day, NS warns.

How the accident happened is still unclear, according to newspaper AD. It seems that the train dragged the excavator for several meters. The excavator driver managed to jump out in time to avoid serious injuries. A number of the overhead lines were damaged.

Railway companies create unnecessary risks when transporting dangerous material by train. Due to "multiple faults" the train traffic between Utrecht Central and Driebergen-Zeist, Houten, Leidsche Rijn and Utrecht Zuilen has come to a complete standstill. The disruption started around 11:15 a.m. NS initially stated that the problem should be cleared up around 2:00 p.m. but has since retracted that statement. "It is not yet known how long this will last", can now be read on the rail company's website.
