Seven men were arrested on Tuesday in connection with the discovery of 2,500 kilograms of hemp in a container of charcoal at the port of Rotterdam in July, the Public Prosecutor announced on Thursday.

The hemp was hidden in a shipment of charcoal that arrived at the port from Nigeria on July 18th. Customs officers discovered the drugs with the help of a container scan and a sniffer dog, according to the Prosecutor. The hemp was removed from the container and destroyed, and the container was sent to its destination.

The police found 674 kilograms of hemp in a van in the Amsterdam neighborhood of Buitenveldert on Thursday, February 23rd. The driver of the vehicle, a 35-year-old Albanian man, was arrested, the police announced in a statement on Wednesday.

According to the police, the discovery was made based on "information received" that a large amount of drugs would be transported in a particular van. On February 23rd officers noticed the van leaving the A9 highway on exit Amstelveen.

Two men were arrested on the A1 in Apeldoorn on Tuesday night after the police found four automatic firearms, about 110 kilos of amphetamine and about 160 kilos of hash and hemp hidden among a shipment of flowers in their truck, the police announced.

The truck of flowers, on its way to Germany, was searched around 10:00 p.m. on Tuesday. When checking the cargo area, the police noticed a large box containing what looked like a firearm among the flowers. Closer inspection showed that it was an automatic firearm.

The world's first bridge built out of completely biological materials - mostly hemp and flax - was placed on the Dommel on the TU Eindhoven campus. The 14 meter long bridge weighs only 1,500 kilograms - four times less than a conventional bridge, the Telegraaf reports.

"All materials are one hundred percent organic, the 'ingredients' of the bio-composite are bio-fiber, bio-resins and bio-foam. Except for the steel bolts", TU/e researcher and project manager Rijk Blok said to the newspaper.

Dutch police discovered 6,006 illegal pot plantations in 2014, RTL Nieuws reports. Altogether, 950 plantations were detected in Oost-Nederland region alone, which is the highest number concentrated in any one part of the country, according to the police statistics.

Last year 4,676 hemp farms were broken up that were connected to energy theft, Netbeheer Nederland announced today on behalf of all the regional grid managers. Their figures show that fewer cannabis plantations that were stealing electricity were broken up, but that more energy was stolen (140 million kWh in 2013 to 147 million kWh in 2014).
