The Netherlands is officially in its second heat wave of the year. At 12:40 p.m. on Tuesday, temperatures hit 30 degrees in De Bilt, meeting the heat wave criteria of five consecutive days with temps above 25 degrees, including three with temps above 30 degrees Celsius, according to Weerplaza.

Two national heat waves in a year is very rare, according to the weather service. This is only the fourth time it's happened in the Netherlands since temperature measurements started in 1901. The other years with two heatwaves were last year, 2006, and 1941.

With a hot weekend ahead of the Netherlands, public health institute RIVM decided to activate the National Heat Plan for the entire country from Saturday. Maximums in the high twenties and low thirties are expected for the weekend and early next week.

A total of 2,964 people died during the July week in which a record breaking heatwave hit the Netherlands. That is almost 400 more deaths than in an average summer week, Statistics Netherlands reported based on preliminary figures.

The operator of carnival show Muizenstad - a miniature city filled with living mice - decided to cancel further appearances this year. The attraction was at the Tilburg fair last week. On Thursday animal activist Karen Soeters posted a video recorded in the the attraction on Wednesday, showing the mice in a tent that was 34 degrees Celsius at the time.

The heat wave in the Netherlands last week resulted in a sharp increase in the number of calls to Dutch water rescue society KNRM. Volunteers were deployed on 160 calls for rescue operations or assistance last week, more than triple what is usual, KNRM spokesperson Kees Brinkman said to NOS.

After a week of record breaking heat, the Netherlands can look forward to more normal summer weather in the coming days. The official heat wave ended on Sunday, though regional heat waves in the east of the country will likely continue until Tuesday, according to Weeronline.

A total of 34 children and two staff members became ill at a campsite in Leusden on Thursday due to the heat. They were all taken to hospital. The organizers of the camp cut the summer camp short and sent the remaining children home, NU.nl reports.

The sick kids were taken to the University Medical Center in Utrecht. Most of them were sent home after a check-up, but four had to spend the night in hospital for observation. Parents of the affected children were asked to go directly to the hospital and collect their children there.

An official heatwave became a fact in the Netherlands even before the sun rose on Friday. At 2:50 a.m. temperatures in De Bilt measured 29.7 degrees, making Friday the fifth consecutive day with temperatures above 25 degrees, according to Weeronline. 

The minimum temperature in De Bilt overnight was 22.9 degrees, making the night from Thursday to Friday the hottest night ever measured in the Netherlands, according to the weather service. The previous record was 22.4 degrees measured in De Bilt on July 27th last year.

For the first time in the country's recorded weather history, temperatures in the Netherlands climbed higher than 40 degrees again setting a new heat record on Thursday. A weather station at the Gilze-Rijen Air Base hit 40.4 degrees at 2:54 p.m, where the country's record was broken with a 39.4 degree reading at 2:40 p.m., and 39.6 degrees 10 minutes later.

NS is running fewer trains on three busy routes - the high speed line between Amsterdam, Schiphol and Rotterdam, between Amsterdam and Eindhoven, and between Eindhoven and Heerlen. The rail company is dealing with capacity problems because trains were exposed to the heat for a long time on Wednesday and therefore need extra maintenance on Thursday, an NS spokesperson said to AD.

Public health institute RIVM issued a "smog alarm" for Noord-Brabant, Zuid-Holland, Limburg, Zeeland, Noord-Holland, Flevoland and Utrecht. The air quality in parts of these provinces will be "very poor" this afternoon and early evening due to the formation of ozone in the air, the institute warns, ANP reports.

Today is officially the hottest July 25th in the Netherlands since temperature measurements started in 1901. At 11:30 a.m. it was 31.8 degrees in De Bilt, breaking the previous record of 31.6 degrees from 2006, Weeronline reports. This is the 10th hottest day record broken so far this year.

Thursday will be another extremely hot day in the Netherlands. Maximums up to 40 degrees are expected, with some places maybe even seeing 41 degrees, according to Weerplaza. The chance is therefore good that the weather records that fell on Wednesday, will fall again today.

The night between Wednesday and Thursday was also very hot. Minimum temperatures ranged between 20 and 24 degrees. On Thursday the thermometers will climb quickly. Maximums will range between 35 and 40 degrees Celsius. There is also very little wind to cool things down.

Temperature readings in Eindhoven soared on Wednesday, hitting 39.3 degrees setting a new record for the hottest day ever recorded in the Netherlands. The old record was set in Warnsveld on August 23, 1944 with a temperature of 38.6 degrees.

More recently, the highest temperature for a July day in the Netherlands was previously measured in Maastricht on July 2, 2015 when the Limburg city sweated its way through a day topping out at 38.6 degrees.

The Netherlands is currently experiencing high temperatures that can result in a heatwave throughout the country this week. The large municipalities are calling on residents to adhere to the National Heat Plan and keep an eye on vulnerable people during the heat of the day. 

“A heat wave occurs when the temperature reaches 25 degrees for at least five consecutive days and at least 3 times 30 degrees are also measured within that series of days,” according to Weerplaza.

With extremely hot weather expected in the coming days, rail manager ProRail and public works department Rijkswaterstaat are taking extra measures to ensure that traffic flows as smoothly as possible. Temperatures above 35 degrees are expected, which can cause problems on both the road and the tracks. A number of events are also taking measures, NOS and NU.nl report.

Tuesday will be sunny and hot with temperatures rising to tropical heights. The sun will shine all day Tuesday. And afternoon temperatures will range between 30 and 33 degrees Celsius, according to Weerplaza.

A light to moderate wind from the south will not do much for cooling down. The coast will be somewhat cooler than inland, due to colder sea winds. 

Wednesday and Thursday will also be very sunny and hot. Temperatures may even climb to 40 degrees in some places in the south of the country on Thursday.

The Netherlands can look forward to real summers weather next week, with high temperatures and little chance of rain. There is even a good chance of a regional heatwave in the southeast of the country, according to Weeronline.

Maximums next week will range between 25 and 30 degrees. The southeast may even see temperatures climb to 34 degrees on Tuesday and Wednesday. The chance of rain and thunderstorms is very small, according to the weather service.

A new record for the warmest-ever June 25 was set on Tuesday when the thermometer peaked at 36 degrees. The new record was set in Volkel, Noord-Brabant, breaking the previous record of 34 degrees set in the same place in 1976.

Today's high temperature was recorded by Dutch meteorological agency KNMI at 4:50 p.m. The record was already beaten hours earlier when 34.2 degrees was recorded in Hupsel, a small Gelderland village just eight kilometers west of the German border.

So far this year the Netherlands had 51 summer days - days on which temperatures climbed to 25 degrees or higher in De Bilt, according to Weeronline. 2006 also had 51 summer days, but spread over the entire year.

Sunday was the 51st summer day of 2018. Only one more hot day is needed to break the 2006 record. This may happen on Wednesday or Thursday, when maximums of around 25 degrees are expected. Temperatures also often climb to above 25 degrees in late August and September, according to Weeronline. In 2006 the 51st summer day only happened on September 22nd.

The hot weather in the Netherlands over the past weeks did not cause an increase in the number of deaths in the country, public health institute RIVM said. According to the institute, this is because many people who were already weakened passed away in the winter, and because the Dutch are getting better at protecting themselves against the heat, AD reports.

Vegetable giant Greenco is giving away some 6 million cherry tomatoes for free. Due to the hot weather, the tomatoes saw too much sun, causing their skin to become wrinkled. They can therefore no longer be sold because their quality is too low for supermarkets.

There is officially a nationwide water shortage in the Netherlands, but the drinking water is not in danger, according to the Ministry of Infrastructure and Water Management. As the drought is expected to continue in the coming weeks, more measures may be taken to distribute the available water as well as possible, NU.nl reports.
