Dutch insurers and firefighters are seeing more and more fires caused by lithium-ion batteries, which are used in electric bicycles, toys, smartphones and tablets. The Salvage Foundation, which offers first help to victims of a major fire on behalf of insurers, responded to 100 fires caused by such batteries last year, compared to 72 in 2017, the Dutch Association of Insurers announced with its annual figures.

A childcare organization is suing the manufacturer of Stint electric cargo bikes. The childcare organization holds Stint Urban Mobility liable for the damages it suffered after the cargo bike was banned from public roads when a Stint was involved in a fatal accident in Oss last year, AD reports.

The temporary committee for mining damage in Groningen, TCMG, paid out a total of over 80 million euros in damage claims to Groningen residents since March last year. Over 17 thousand damage claims haven't yet been processed, and more claims continue to come in. Last week the committee received 462 new damage claims, the TCMG announced, NOS reports.

Tour operators and travel agencies plan to claim the damages they suffered due to refueling problems at Schiphol on Wednesday back from the airport. The disruption led to hundreds of flights being canceled or delayed, affecting tens of thousands of travelers. "It involves a lot of money", Frank Oostdam of trade association ANVR said to NOS.

The temporary committee for mining damage in Groningen TCMG received a total of 2,875 damage reports after a 3.4 magnitude earthquake at Westerwijtwerd in the municipality of  Loppersumm last week, RTV Noord reports.

Most of the damage reports came from the municipality of Groningen, 1,323 in total. Stadskanaal is the only municipality in the province that had no damage reports. There were also dozens of reports from the province of Drenthe.

The Temporary Committee on Mining Damage in Groningen received 90 damage reports on Wednesday after a 3.4 magnitude earthquake hit the province near the village of Westerwijwerd early in the morning. There were also 12 reports of potentially acutely dangerous situations, NU.nl reports.

Dutch insurers are getting more and more damage claims related to car fires. Last year there were 4,359 such claims, a 9 percent increase compared to the 4,014 car fire claims in 2017, RTL Nieuws reports based on the latest figures from the Dutch Association of Insurers.

Last year fewer people submitted damage claims for fire to Dutch insurers, according to the Dutch Association of Insurers. A total of almost 96 thousand fire damage claims were received last year, a decrease of 7 percent compared to 2016, NOS reports.

The association largely attributes the decrease to the fact that there were fewer storms in the Netherlands last year. "Experience shows that thunderstorms often cause a lot of fire claims, but luckily they were absent last year", director Richer Weurding said to NOS.

The boy's family is considering filing a damage claim and pressing charges of slander and libel, the family confirmed to Brabants Dagblad.

On Monday the claims desk specifically for handling damages caused by gas extraction in Groningen opened. The 30 employees of the claims desk is facing a major workload - around 12 thousand damage cases are waiting to be examined, because almost nothing has been done with them since March 31st last year, RTL Nieuws reports.

An independent committee will start by making an inventory and assessing the damage claims. The claims desk is part of a new damage protocol that Minister Eric Wiebes of Economic Affairs and Climate presented on January 31st.

Achmea expect to pay out more than 100 million euros in claims for damages caused by the two storms that raged over the Netherlands in January, the insurer announced on Wednesday. This includes damages suffered by the agricultural sector, NU.nl reports.

The family of a military sergeant killed in an accident during a shooting drill in Ossendrecht two years ago, submitted a damage claim to the Ministry of Defense. The family is claiming damage caused by loss of income as well as emotional damage, lawyer Michael Ruperti said to ANP.

The lawyer would not comment on the amount involved in the claim. Defense has until March 1st to respond, or a lawsuit will be filed.

Minister Eric Wiebes of Economic Affairs and Climate called gas extraction in Groningen a "Dutch government failure of un-Dutch like proportions" during a visit to various Groningen municipalities affected by fracking earthquakes on Wednesday. He wants to quickly make agreements with the local governments about the consequences of earthquakes in the province, ANP reports.

Insurance company Interpolis estimated receiving some 1,500 damage claims after the storms and high winds on Tuesday and Wednesday. The Liberation Day storm alone caused about a thousand reports, according to Telegraaf.

The Labour Party (PvdA) is making headway with its plan to reverse the burden of proof of earthquake damages caused by gas extraction in Groningen, reports De Telegraaf. MP Jan Vos submitted a proposal to this effect to Cabinet, he said on Wednesday. The Cabinet will have the chance to vote on the proposal Tuesday, says the newspaper.
