The Borssele nuclear power plant will remain shut down in the coming days for an extensive inspection. The plant shut down automatically on Saturday afternoon due to a malfunction. Operations will only restart after the inspection is done and the cause of the malfunction is found, a spokesperson for the Zeeland electricity producer EPZ said to newspaper AD.

The malfunction occurred in the reactor safety system. "The nuclear power plant is designed in such a way that it automatically goes to a safe state", the spokesperson said. The cause of the malfunction is under investigation.

Shell is teaming up with energy company Eneco and offshore company Van Oord to build a massive wind farm off the shore of Borssele in Zeeland .The wind farm will consist of about 100 windmills and will generate enough energy to supply a million households, AD reports.

A massive 700-megawatt wind farm set for construction in the North Sea will cost the Dutch government 2.7 billion euros less in subsidy than initially planned. Construction of the project at the Borssele site, 22 kilometers from the Zeeland shoreline, was awarded to Danish firm DONG Energy, Economic Affairs minister Henk Kamp announced on Tuesday.

Greenpeace is concerned abut the safety of the nuclear power plant in Borssele since the nearby coal plant closed in November last year. According to the environmental organization, the coal plant closing left the nuclear plant with insufficient independent power supplies to guarantee safety

The police arrested a 54 year old man and a 41 year old woman from Roosendaal with a car containing 250 cans of baby formula powder at the Westerschelde tunnel toll plaza in Borsesele on Saturday night.

Officers first noticed the heavily loaded car driving through the Westerschelde tunnel towards Zuid-Beveland around 8:00 p.m. on Saturday. The car was pulled over at the toll plaza and officers found the 250 cans of baby formula. The man and woman in the car claimed that they bought the formula, but could not show receipts.

At least four people were injured Wednesday morning when two different explosions occurred in a biomass power plant in Borssele, Zeeland, the regional safety office reported. The office says all four were hospitalized, however broadcaster Omroep Zeeland says two people received serious injuries and were rushed to an area hospital and the others were treated at the scene.
