The Netherlands will hold a major climate summit, comparable to the one in Paris almost three years ago, in 2020, Minister Cora van Nieuwenhuizen of Infrastructure and Water Management announced at the presentation of a new global climate committee which will be established in Rotterdam and Groningen. The Global Commission on Adaption will draw up a global action plan against the consequences of climate change, among other things, NOS reports.

United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-moon was made a Knight Grand Cross in the Order of Orange-Nassau - the highest civilian award in the Netherlands - on Tuesday. Minister Bert Koenders of Foreign Affairs gave the award during a ceremony in the Catshuis.

Minister Bert Koenders of Foreign Affairs will be visiting the United Nations in New York on Monday and Tuesday. During his visit he will give a speech about Syria and the fight against ISIS. He will also speak about the Netherlands' ambition to become a temporary member of the UN Security council from 2017 to 2018, the elections for membership are in June.

At the climate summit in New York Tuesday, State Secretary Sharon Dijksma of Economic Affairs will present a new Dutch plan to combat famine in developing countries. According to the Algemeen Dagblad, 75 countries are already supportive of the plan.

In Amsterdam, thousands of people took part in an international effort to raise awareness for climate change. Sunday saw more than 150 countries take part in the Peoples Climate March, calling on the political leaders to make more effort to take better care of the planet, the NOS reports.

At least 189 Dutch nationals including a Senator were amongst the 298 people onboard Malaysia Airlines flight 17 when it was apparently shot down over Ukrainian airspace near the Russian border. The airline says that four of the passengers' nationalities have not yet been determined.

Sigrid Kaag, a Dutch woman who at this moment works as assistant secretary general for the development program of the UN, is appointed to lead the disarmament mission of the UN in Syria.

The chemical weapons of Syria have to be destroyed. This was agreed by the US, Russia and Syria around half September.

 

The UN will cooperate in this mission with the OPWC, an organisation which is active with the forbidding of chemical weapons. OPWC is situated in The Hague.

King Willem-Alexander and queen Máxima received on Tuesday UN leader Ban Ki-moon and his wife at the Noordeinde Palace in The Hague. The king has invited the couple to dinner at the palace. Princess Beatrix was also present, reported the Government Information Service (RVD).
