In Amsterdam, thousands of people took part in an international effort to raise awareness for climate change. Sunday saw more than 150 countries take part in the Peoples Climate March, calling on the political leaders to make more effort to take better care of the planet, the NOS reports.
In Amsterdam, between 5,000 and 10,000 people came from all over the country, according to initiator Urgenda, on foot, by bicycle or by boat, to the end-destination of the demonstration at the EYE film museum. The closing event included performances from Freek de Jonge, singer Sef and DJ Isis.

During this meeting, 120 government leaders will discuss CO2 emissions and other greenhouse gas emissions. Prime Minister Mark Rutte of The Netherlands will also be present.
New York was the scene of the biggest demonstration with 100,000 people present. Mayor Bill de Blasio took part as well, as he said that climate change "is a threat to New York and our planet. Taking action now is nothing more than a moral duty."
Celebrities known for their involvement with climate change were also present in New York including Al Gore, Sting, Neil Young and Leonardo DiCaprio. The actor was inaugurated to become a special Ambassador for Peace by UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon.
