The Kingdom of the Netherlands wants a broad and legally binding agreement in which the rapid reduction of emissions and adaptation to the effects of climate change are well balanced. This was the Netherlands stance in the final preparations for the UN Climate Summit which is to be held in Paris from November 30 till December 11.

Over the past five months coal consumption in the Netherlands has been nearly a third higher than in the past three years, despite attempts to reduce green house gas emissions in the country. Coal combustion produces almost twice as much greenhouse gas as gas-fired power plants.

Eurostat estimates that carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions from fossil fuel combustion fell by five percent in the European Union in 2014 compared to a year before. Emissions of CO2 account for 80 percent of all EU greenhouse gas emissions.

The Netherlands is planning to give up its unused, extra greenhouse gas allocation, the allowable amount the country may release into the atmosphere. In doing so, the Dutch government hopes to set an example to other countries in the European Union and those onboard with the Kyoto Protocol on climate change, the Cabinet revealed in a statement on Tuesday.

In Amsterdam, thousands of people took part in an international effort to raise awareness for climate change. Sunday saw more than 150 countries take part in the Peoples Climate March, calling on the political leaders to make more effort to take better care of the planet, the NOS reports.
