Princess Amalia joins Amsterdam student assoc. after earlier refusal over misogyny
Princess Amalia has joined the Amsterdam student association A.S.C./A.V.S.V., sources told Quote. In 2022, the Dutch crown princess decided against joining the student association due to a misogyny scandal - videos surfaced of a dinner in which male members called women “cum buckets” and “whores” in their speeches.
According to Quote, Amalia participated in A.S.C./A.V.S.V.’s post-introduction period with a camp in Leusden. She will participate in hazing this week.
By joining the Amsterdam student association, Amalia completely breaks with family tradition. Unlike her father, King Willem-Alexander, and her grandmother, Princess Beatrix, she chose against studying in Leiden and becoming a member of the Leiden student association Minerva, opting for Amsterdam and now its student association instead. Amalia also spent a year in Spain after threats forced her to leave Amsterdam for a time.
In addition to sexism, A.S.C./A.V.S.V. also made headlines in recent years for physically abusing and humiliating new members during hazing. The corps has apologized, implemented a code of conduct, and appointed confidential counselors. Their introduction week and other events will also have stricter supervision this year.
The A.S.C./A.V.S.V. and the government information service, RVD, did not comment on Amalia joining the student association.
