Trains, flights already cancelled with snow forecast on Wednesday

Dutch national railway NS will run a reduced schedule on Wednesday morning with forecasted snow expected to fall across much of the country. Up to 3 centimeters of snow is expected across much of the Netherlands.

The limited train schedule is in place so the NS can quickly respond to problems, and provide more accurate travel information, the railway said. Passengers can expect longer travel times and more crowded trains.

Similarly, Schiphol Airport is warning passengers of the likelihood of delays and cancellations because of the snowfall. Dutch airline KLM already scrapped 21 departures from Schiphol, and another 21 arrivals. All of its affected flights are within Europe.

The airline is already offering passengers the possibility of re-booking or requesting a refund.

A Code Yellow weather warning was announced by the KNMI for Wednesday morning. The warning is for snow and slick roads. The weather warning is in effect from 2 a.m. to noon in Zeeland, and from 5 a.m. to 2 p.m. in Noord-Brabant and Zuid-Holland.

The warning starts at 8 a.m. and will last for 13 hours in Limburg, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. in Utrecht, and from 3 p.m. through midnight in Drenthe, Flevoland, Friesland, Gelderland, Groningen, Noord-Holland, and Overijssel.

As much as 5 centimeters could land in Limburg, according to weather website Weeronline.nl. Snow flakes will likely make a first appearance in Zeeland, and progress north and east, according to the KNMI weather service.
