Snow is expected in the Alps this weekend and that is good news for the Rijn river, according to Weeronline. After the weekend the water level in the Rijn will not fall further, and may even rise a bit, the weather service expects.

The snow is expected in France, Switzerland, southern Germany and the northern parts of Austria. "A few dozen centimeters of snow are expected above 1,500 meters. Around 50 millimeters of precipitation will fall and that is good news for the water level in the Rijn", Weeronline writes.

Morning rush hour was particularly chaotic in Limburg on Monday, with snow causing numerous traffic problems. A 2 centimeter layer of snow caused traffic jams on the highways and inland roads in the province south of Sittard, according to traffic services ANWB and VID, NU.nl reports.

About 450,000 Dutch are expected to take to the roadways just to enjoy the winter sports offerings in neighboring countries, and some sun. Together with returning holidaymakers, these departures will cause heavy traffic on the main highways of the Netherlands, Dutch travellers association ANWB said on Friday.

Some of the hundreds of thousands of residents will depart on Friday, and the rest over the weekend. These are primarily people based in the north or central part of the country, with those living in the southern Netherlands returning home.

Snowfall resulted in icy, slippery roads in the north and east of the Netherlands on Thursday morning. Meteorological institute KNMI issued a code yellow warning for the provinces of Friesland, Groningen, Drenthe, and Overijssel. Other weather services warn motorists in Flevoland and Gelderland to also be careful of slippery roads.

The iciness on the roads will melt away during the course of the morning.

Snow expected to start falling in the Netherlands later this morning, is already causing problems with air traffic. Schiphol lists a number of flight cancelations, and KLM announced on Thursday that the airline is canceling 26 flights scheduled for Friday. Motorists, especially in the west of the country, are warned to be careful of icy roads during morning rush hour.

The Netherlands can expect snow on Friday, according to meteorological institute KNMI. A code yellow warning for snow and icy roads will be in effect all day on Friday.

The snow will start in the west on Friday morning, and spread out to the rest of the country during the course of the day. KNMI expects between 1 and 3 centimeters of snow. The western parts of the country may also see some rain in the afternoon. 

Motorists are warned to be careful of icy roads and to adjust their driving behavior - drive carefully, slowly and keep a safe following distance.

The prospect of slippery roads prompted the Dutch national weather service, KNMI, to issue another Code Yellow weather warning. The caution is in effect across the Netherlands from 4 p.m. on Tuesday through noon on Wednesday.

Snow is also possible in the center of the country, and continuing to the east and south. The eastern provinces have the highest likelihood for icy roadways overnight, but with winter showers expected everywhere in the Netherlands drivers were told to be particularly careful.

This week promises to be windy, rainy and stormy, according to weather service Weeronline. With strong winds starting on Monday afternoon, wind and rain expected for Tuesday, and maybe some snow expected for Wednesday, the stormy weather will climax with a big storm on Thursday.

There's an about 80 percent chance that there will be a storm somewhere along the Dutch coast on Monday afternoon, according to Weeronline. A rainy area will cross the country during the afternoon, which could cause extra traffic during evening rush hour.

Snow lovers in the Netherlands are in for a pleasant surprise tomorrow. Snow is expected for Friday, starting in the southwest of the country around mid-morning, Weeronline reports.

Today will be partly cloudy with some showers, and maybe some wet snow. Afternoon temperatures will range from 2 degrees in the east to 5 degrees along the coast. Though Weeronline warns that the ambient temperatures across the country will feel just below freezing.

Meteorological institute KMNI issued a code yellow weather warning for all provinces except for Zeeland. After heavy snowfall on Monday caused two days of chaos at Dutch airports, most flights are now departing and landing on schedule.

According to the KMNI, the ice on the roads will melt away as temperatures increase during the course of the morning. "Adjust your driving behavior", the institute warns. Drive slowly and keep a safe following distance.

Monday's heavy snowfall, and the problems in traffic and productivity it caused, cost the Dutch economy around 35 million euros, according to calculations by the Economic Research Foundation and Statistics Netherlands chief economist Peter Hein van Mulligen, BNR reports.

If there is a whole business day in which no work is done in a quarter, like when Christmas falls on a week day, it costs the Netherlands' GDP 0.2 to 0.3 percent of growth, Van Mulligen said to the broadcaster. That amounts to 350 million euros the Netherlands' economy loses out on.

Snowy weather in the Netherlands on Monday resulted in a record number of traffic jams during evening rush hour. At the peak of traffic late in the afternoon, there were around 1,500 kilometers of traffic jams on Dutch roads, according to the ANWB. Taking all roads into account, there was on Monday afternoon.
