Only 15 percent of Netherlands residents are stuck in traffic at least once a week, with most saying that they are much more likely to face difficulties during evening rush hour than in the mornings. The majority, 51 percent, only sporadically end up in a traffic jam. People in the Netherlands are also less and less annoyed by being stuck in traffic jams, defined as stop-and-go traffic that barely rises above 25 kilometers per hour.

The governments of Noord-Holland, Flevoland and Utrecht are hoping to stimulate electric driving with more charging points. A total of 20 thousand new charging points will be installed in the three provinces, which put out a call for bids on the project on Monday.

"Twenty thousand new charging points are a great next step and will really help to encourage electric driving," said Utrecht provincial politician Huib van Essen. He said his province alone needs at least another four thousand charging points in the coming years.

On January 1st there were 2,000,404 businesses in the Netherlands - the first time ever this counter topped 2 million, according to figures from the Dutch chamber of commerce KvK. The number of companies in the Netherlands increased by almost 100 thousand last year, an increase of 5 percent, NOS reports.

A fisherman from Urk in Flevoland saved 21 people attempting to cross the English Channel on Sunday night. Among them were a six-week-old baby, and two toddlers, according to several Dutch media reports, though one French authority said a total of 19 migrants were rescued, including 16 men, one woman, and two children.

The Dutch government is in discussions with the school boards in five cities hard-hit by a shortage of teachers to roll out emergency plans to address the problem. The ruling cabinet announced on Monday it will have a plan in place to tackle the issue in Amsterdam and The Hague by the end of January, and then it will begin addressing the shortages in Rotterdam, Utrecht and Almere.

Car owners in the Netherlands will pay 147 million euros more in road taxes next year than this year, according to Statistics Netherlands. The increase is partly due to the growing fleet of vehicles, higher rates, and the particulate matter tax that will be implemented. In total, the government and provinces expect to collect almost 6.1 billion euros in road tax in 2020.

The road tax, or motor vehicle tax, consists of a government part and a part collected by the provinces. The government expects to collect 131 million euros more next year, the provinces 16 million euros more.

The 11-year-old girl who was the subject of an Amber Alert was found within 30 minutes after the alert was issued, a spokesperson for the Amber Alert system told NL Times. The girl was found in her hometown of Lelystad because of the mass notification, the spokesperson said citing information released to her by the police.

"The missing girl has been found. Thank you all for sharing [the bulletin]," Lelystad police said on social media.

Police detained two persons of interest connected to the murder of criminal defense attorney Derk Wiersum. The arrests were announced on television show Opsporing Verzocht on Tuesday night.

The duo were taken into custody for their possible roles in fencing a stolen vehicle allegedly used to monitor Wiersum shortly before he was killed. They were questioned and released, police said.

Forestry service Staatsbosbeheer and the province of Flevoland must stop the large-scale culling of red deer in nature reserve Oostvaardersplassen, the Midden-Nederland court ruled on Tuesday. Multiple nature organizations lodged an appeal against the mass culling of red deer in order to reduce the number of large grazers in the nature reserve, NU.nl reports.

A group of six people was being held in connection with raising at least 200 thousand euros in donations, much of which was allegedly distributed to help finance terrorism. Four men were arrested in the Netherlands, and two were taken into custody in Belgium, the Public Prosecution Service (OM) said on Monday.

Donors were duped into thinking the money they contributed was being raised with a goal of "providing assistance to war victims," according to the OM. Instead, much of the money was distributed to ISIS fighters in Turkey and Syria in 2013 and 2014, the prosecution alleged.

Delft hyperloop company Hardt Hyperloop received millions of euros in investments this past year and plans to use this money to build a 3 kilometer long test track in the Netherlands. The test track will be part of the company's yet-to-be-built European Hyperloop Center. If all goes according to plan, Hardt Hyperloop hopes to launch the first commercial hyperloop connection by 2025, AD reports

In a major investigation into so-called criminal facilitators, the FIOD uncovered a large network of drug, weapons and anabolic steroids traffickers. Six people from Noord-Holland, Zuid-Holland, Utrecht and Flevoland were arrested over the past months. The FIOD seized 450 thousand euros in cash and bank balances, and over a million euros worth of ecstasy, steroids and medicines, AD reports.

The police arrested a gang that stole 122 mobile phones from attendees of the Defqon.1 in Biddinghuizen in early June. Many of the phones have since been returned to their rightful owners, but 75 still remain unclaimed. The police are looking for people who lost their phone at the dance festival so that it can be returned to them.

Seven members of the phone stealing gang were arrested in the past weeks, according to De Stentor. With these arrests, 122 stolen phones were recovered.

Public health institute RIVM issued a "smog alarm" for Noord-Brabant, Zuid-Holland, Limburg, Zeeland, Noord-Holland, Flevoland and Utrecht. The air quality in parts of these provinces will be "very poor" this afternoon and early evening due to the formation of ozone in the air, the institute warns, ANP reports.

The average national rent increase in the second quarter of 2019 was the lowest since the second quarter of 2015. Rents in the Netherlands increased an average of 3.1 percent in the second quarter of this year, according to figures from Pararius. This clearly shows that the price increases are slowing down, the housing platform said, NU.nl reports. 

Rent increases fell below 5 percent for the first time in 3.5 years in the last quarter of 2018. And that slowing down effect is continuing, according to Pararius.

An investigation into the discovery of cocaine hidden in a flower shipment in January led to a much larger drug bust in April. Ten people were taken into custody who worked for a logistics firm at Schiphol Airport in Amsterdam after 160 kilograms of cocaine was found in another flower shipment.

It was not revealed when the arrests took place, but eight of the suspects were still in custody on Thursday.

A 38-year-old man who was severely beaten at an Almere business park on Saturday morning has died from injuries sustained in the assault. Police were still looking for the suspect on Tuesday morning.

A blonde woman was seen shooting video of the incident at Markerkant 11 in Almere Stad. Police were hopeful that the woman would contact authorities to share any images she obtained.

An argument at a pay terminal inside a parking garage erupted in gunfire, leaving one young man badly wounded. The man, identified by family as Orpheo Gefferie, died from his injuries at an area hospital, police said.

The mother of his seven-year-old child called Gefferie "the best dad" their son could have had. "We will forever love you," she said on social media.

Gefferie, from Almere, was identified by police as being 26, although at least one newspaper report said he was 24. He spent time traveling back and forth between his Almere home and Suriname.

All bridges and locks in the province of Flevoland are out of order on Thursday due to malfunction. When the problem will be fixed is not yet clear, said FlevoVaarwegen, the province's official twitter account for information on waterworks.

The malfunction occurred at around 11:00 a.m. Technicians are on site to try and fix the problems.

The  average selling price of existing owner-occupied homes in the Netherlands amounted to 302,845 euors in March. That is 7.7 percent higher than in March 2018, and the highest level in Dutch history, Statistics Netherlands and the Land Registry reported on Tuesday.

Compared to the low point on the housing market in June 2013, prices for existing owner-occupied homes were 36.1 percent higher in March. Home prices have been climbing consistently ever since the low point on the market. In May 2018, prices for the first time reached above the record level in August 2008.

Dutch national railway NS will run a reduced schedule on Wednesday morning with forecasted snow expected to fall across much of the country. Up to 3 centimeters of snow is expected across much of the Netherlands.

The limited train schedule is in place so the NS can quickly respond to problems, and provide more accurate travel information, the railway said. Passengers can expect longer travel times and more crowded trains.

There were over 1,635 kilometers of traffic jams across the Netherlands at 5:05 p.m. on Tuesday, just as the evening rush hour got underway, according to travel association ANWB. A snow storm that started on the west coast in the morning was slowly making its way east, and was still expected to hover over the provinces of Friesland, Groningen, Drenthe, Overijssel, Gelderland, Limburg, and parts of Flevoland and Noord-Brabant past 6 p.m.
